Times have changed, you said it yourself. Cap is rising and cap space is not worth what it used to be. Treliving traded Monahan at a time when cap space was the most valuable, making basically an all-in move for a roster that was clearly not ready to go all-in, in hindsight. It was a huge mistake, but we're years past it now and in a completely different phase of team building, so probably time to let it go.

I think so. why make the deal. You get a 5th for what? With Coulture you are above the cap floor. Now you are sitting at 9M cap space. If a bunch of their young kids hit on their bonuses, that could add another 7M.
Just paints them into a bit of a corner if they take on any other contract. Seems odd to me.

Askarov is going to be pissed, he was stuck behind Saros in Nashville and now will be stuck behind Price in San Jose
Really the only team that made sense to acquire this contract as they were the only team below the cap floor

… but without Couture?
SJS have got other things cooking. Must be that. Price helps them reach the floor after they move a vet or two for futures.

I could be wrong, but putting a player on LTIR only helps if you are over the cap, it does nothing if you are under. As far as I know is 8M would have counted to get them above the floor. I know some of the cap sites showed them under, but they never counted him. What is the difference between LTIR Price and LTIR Coulture, I don't think there is any.

Correct. Putting a player on LTIR allows you to go over the cap for that amount, which is why you saw some cap teams trade for those contracts as it allowed them to add another player at a similar value.
The downside is when you are in LTIR, you don't accrue daily cap space and have less to play with at the deadline.

With Price traded, I believe Backlund is now the longest tenured played on any Canadian team.

This was never true. If a cap team trades for a player on LTIR, then the player on LTIR himself is using up the extra cap space they are allowed to spend.

Ok. Then why did Vegas trade for Shea Weber's contract?

They hit the cap floor for very little. That's a win. Guys like Privce where you get $10.5 of cap for $2M actually have value.

I wonder if there is an insurance reason that Couture needs to be on LTIR so they need to keep him there but can then have Price not on LTIR to get them to the cap floor

That is the thing I don't get, when we went through the whole Klyington thing, Treliving said there is no point to put him on LTIR as the flames at the time didn't need to leverage the cap space with LTIR. Which is why I never understood Coulture being on LTIR and not counting. Like you mentioned, there might be some obscure thing or just maybe the cap sites are incorrectly deducting his 8M.

That's not quite how LTIR works. The cap hits on LTIR still count towards the cap. LTIR allows a team to exceed the cap by up to that amount. However placing a player on LTIR sets your LTIR pool, and once you exceed the cap by using said pool then cap space can no longer be accured.
That's why Kylington wasn't placed on LTIR, and why I doubt either Couture or Price go on LTIR in the offseason, especially while the Sharks are well below the salary cap.

Contract might insured? Actually money doesnt matter. Space is essentially worth that. If lots of teams have excess?

That is exactly what I thought, which why I thought it was weird that the cap sites were showing SJ below the floor and not adding Coulture. Which brings us back to why trade for Price for just a 5th. Really let the habs off easy.
