Habs trade Price and a 5th to Sharks for Gannon Laroque
Love when they wait until Friday afternoon to announce stuff.

Buying a 5th round pick for $2M seems a bit steep.
I think that the Sharks were about $5M over the cap floor, so I doubt that was a factor.

Maybe SHarks have a deal to ship out another player for picks, this keeps them compliant. Otherwise, why?

If that’s the case, what motivation is there for the Sharks to do this? Like you said, $5 million for a 5th round pick is steep. Can’t see how a GM could sell that to an owner - unless it’s all covered under insurance. In which case, I guess they got a 5th round pick for just cap space they are not going to use anyways.

The only reason I could think of is if Price could actually spend time around the team, and around Askarov in particular. Have a former MVP goalie give advice to the future of the franchise. Especially if the Sharks were disappointed by getting Nadeljkovic instead of Alan, and Vladar as the backup. Then he might be worth it as a coach. That said, I doubt that's the case, or that Price would want that kind of role.

It was $2M, and yeah it seems like a strange move. Unless the owners find a way to make the money work in other ways outside of hockey. I guess insurance could play a big role, especially if it covers at least half.

Maybe Price would only waive to certain teams? I don't understand such a bad return.

It does go a long way to keeping the Sharks above the cap floor if they decide to deal away a couple of their pricier vets.

What's Gannon Laroque's purpose in this deal?
Dude played 18 games in 2023 and 2024 combined in the AHL and ECHL
And then none last year.
Why is he even involved in this?

San Jose was pretty close to the 50 contract limit, so moving out a contract gives them some breathing room I guess?
Otherwise, yeah, don't know.

Future Considerations wouldn't waive for Montreal.

I know Mtl was cap compliant and times have changed but it really irritates me how badly Treliving and predecessors did in deals to move out cap looking back at Monahan and Regehr deals, moving out good players for pennies on the dollar or even with assets to get rid of contracts and now seeing teams move 10 mil for a 5th

This is a good point. Wennberg and almost their entire D corps are pending UFAs.

San Jose are extremely attached to their stadium seats and Team Bus?

Now he can tell his kids he was traded for Carey Price, that seems like it'd be cool.
