The gist of the Staples rant is that it'll somehow be Trudeau's fault if McDavid bolts for the Big Smoke.

Notice how he uses this year a lot in regards to the Oilers. This is it, it's this year for the Oilers and only this year.

Very calculated comments from McDavid these days. Obviously he knows this line of questioning was coming and is ready with all the comments.
Same with the Oilers, who are putting on a brave face.
All parties know how this is going to play out. Oilers media either dumb as rocks or very good actors about being as surprised, as desperate sounding as they suddenly are.

It is wild that more media aren’t talking about this with skepticism. Because it’s absolutely obvious him emphasizing this year and that should speak volumes.

Should be fun watching the McDavid circus all season.
What will the sportsnet fan club do when he bolts to the states

Man, he sure sank a lot of dough into what was essentially a derelict building.

He's talking about doing what's best for him and the team and "not all about money". I thought he took the max contract last time?

Nope. Remember the Edmonton media (amd likely Oilers leaking) stating a couple weeks before that it would be $15+ mil per season, and then rejoicing that he "took a discount" at $12.5mil AAV?

It’s completely outside noise. It comes from Toronto mostly, it comes from Calgary a lot, and they seem to piggyback off of one another. They’ve got to have something to talk about all summer long too.

For a media group that is pretending to not be worried, they are clearly bothered by the uncertainty.

Draisaitl's comments would leave me even less sure if I was an Oiler's fan. Paraphrasing, he said he'd love for McDavid to stay, but it's not an easy decision because he has to think about what is best for him and his family. It sounded like there was some acceptance already that he may not stay.

I still think he signs a short-term deal, but it begs the question, if that's what's going to happen, why hasn't it happened yet?
I started to listen to the new 32 thoughts this morning, and it seemed like Friedman was surprised and puzzled that this isn't done. He said "I'm surprised we are here". and that other teams are starting to wonder what the chances are McDavid actually could hit UFA, because if there's a possibility some teams "have to make sure you have a chance at him, and your decks are clear".
He further speculates that McDavid may think they can win "this year" but isn't convinced beyond that.
It's a definite shift in how he is talking about this.

I think if he is considering a short-term deal he does it somewhere else. That team really doesn't have the supporting pieces to get it done. Bad defense that keeps getting older, no forward depth and poor goaltending.
Go sign a 3-yr deal with the Avalanche, win his cup and then go sign long term in Toronto.

Again though that impacts his legacy. It will always be "he couldn't get it done on his own" which puts him a tier below all the other best players. And I think he's very focused on that legacy.
This COULD end up being the worst case scenario if:
- McDavid wants to see if they can win this year, and how sustainable that is going forward
- As the season progresses, as long as they are in a playoff spot, they can't trade him
- Which increases the risk that he walks for nothing. For instance, they make the playoffs, lose in the first round, and then that's enough for him to say "it ain't gonna happen here".
Having McDavid walk for nothing would be a disaster.

He's already proven he can't get it done on his own. He has Draisaitl who some would argue is perhaps better than McDavid and they still can't get it done. So, him going to play with MacKinnon and Makar is really not different.
But I do understand what you are saying.

Which teams will have McDavid cap space again?
I feel like the more we talk about it, the more real it becomes. Apparently we're also ruffling Staples and Stauffer's feathers, so all the better!

Almost all the key players on the roster are 30+ years old. None of them are going to be better. In fact the roster likely peaked in the 23/24 season when Hyman and RNH had their career seasons. Clearly he can see that the window is closing on the organization and likely wants to avoid a situation like Crosby in Pittsburgh stuck on an old team on the decline.

Teams can always make changes and move players to make space but how many teams have the pieces to be a contender and still have space. Its likely a short list, but these teams could likely make it work:
- Carolina
- NYR
- Colorado
