I love how during the Flames run to the cup finals they had no problem with adorning the fleet with "Go Flames Go" stickers.
On another note though, those stupid ribbon stickers are getting old. When you see ones on cars that say "support pimps", then I can see why some aldermen might think it's a cheap and easy thing. Finally, don't let this sticker guy fool you. If he gives out 5,000 to city fleet you can bet he's got another 25,000 ready to sell to the public. With absolutely none of that planned to go to any charity.

But Sean Burnand, with Canwest Labels, says that's not why he was giving the labels to the city, so he'll instead donate the labels directly to the resource centre on his own.
He says he's disappointed in council's decision.

I am completely disgusted with Calgary's city council. These people have no balls whats so ever. I hope all of them exept McIver gets voted out in the next election.

I think EVERYONE supports the troops. What McIver was doing smacks of shameless political grand-standing.

I love how they did that too, but supporting the local hockey squad isn't exactly controversial or a political issue.
The amount of time they've wasted over this nonsense could be a political issue though.
Who made this up, by the way? Anyone remember? Was it the "ribbon donater" who made it public that he would be donating ribbons but the ribbons weren't accepted? If it was him, good skills on his part. If it was some Alderman, well, he can piss off.
Putting a goddamn ribbon on a bus doesn't mean anything. If you support putting a ribbon on a bus, you are supporting a ribbon on a bus, you aren't really "supporting the troops" any more than I do, and I don't care one way or the other if they put a ribbon on the bus.

Lame cop out by the city.
Why not agree to put them on the city vehicles AND sell them for charity?
I dont see the point in their alternative other than they have no sack to make a decision that may not appeal to everyone.

There are better ways to support the troops then a ribbon, even though the proceeds go to some of the families.
Write letters to them, or send a care package, or show up and thank them when they come home.
If you see a soldier on the street, it wouldn't hurt to say hello and thank them, that means a lot.

hahaha, considering this guy's history in every other issue, the fact that you think he is the one standing above the pack is probably the most assinine thing I've heard all week.

If they donate them, there probably isn't any money going to anyone. Then what's the point? If they sell them, the proceeds go to the families.
What's the point of having a donated support the troops sticker on your car? If you pay for it, then you are actually supporting them with funding to the various family programs.

Title needs some modification, makes it seem like the company is being ######s, when actuality its the city with their head up their ass.
What the company is proposing makes perfect sense.

Yes, those are all good things that one can do to show their support, but I disagree that it is better. They had many military veterns and families that came to support this effort. They said it means a lot to have their home town behind them and to see that when they come home. Not to mention it also keeps these people in the public light as we would be reminded every day that they are their to help not just us but the afghan people.

Well I have to say that I do not know what this guys history is on many other proposals but I am strictly talking about this issue and I support him and I am glad there are people on the council who will put up a fight against the idiot mayor.

The way I think I understand this is, the previous proposal had the city putting the decals on the their vehicles, which would boost the moral of the troops and show the City cares about them.
The current proposal has the city selling the decals to the residents of Calgary and donating the money to an organization that helps military families.
How can you say the city doesn't support the troops? Both of these solutions seem to do just that. One might give the support of moral, where as the other gives direct help to the troops. The later just has the city not stepping on anyones toes with the political issue that the supporting of the troops can lead people to believe you are also supporting the war.
Whats supporting the troops more? A magnet on your car, or direct monetary investments to a military resource centre for families?
|
There are organizations already selling the decals with proceeds going to the families. The fact is the people down at idiot hall do not have the guts to say, yes lets put them on our vehicles, they are giving them to us free so lets show our support. They are to worried that they will offend someone by supporting the troops.
It is not just about financial support, it is about public support and showing that in public. Like I stated before, many families said that they would greatly appreciate this gesture. By your argument, why even have Rememberance day???? Lets just send the money to the military families because that would help them more.
There is a lot more to it than financial support......

I've got one on my city vehicle here in Edmonton. If council takes them away, I'll buy my own and put it on.

Displaying GO FLAMES GO on a car is a far cry from SUPPORT OUR TROOPS. There are no political implications, and they are not likely to divide their support with a flames sticker.
Personally I don't know enough about this war and why our troops are over there to have made a decision on who I support and where- but I appreciate to the death that our troops are taking the ultimate risk to protect the rights of others and to maintain peace and freedom in our world.
I wouldn't sport a ribbon on my car though. Too many political agendas are mixed in and being persued in this war, in other countries (USA, Britain, etc) and perhaps our own. Our troops being out there in the first place is a testiment to that.

Well, we can certainly disagree on this point... I think writing a letter/filling a giftbox/volunteering your time with veterans is a LOT better than slapping a sticker on your bumper. A bumper sticker is the laziest kind of support I could imagine.
