What exactly is the NDP in 2025?

Back to Jagmeet Singh. After the election, former NDP MP Charlie Angus summed things up thusly at a press conference held a week after the federal election in which the NDP lost 17 seats: “When it came to the biggest economic and political crisis in memory, we didn’t have an offer on the table because we were selling a leader and his likable personality and his style.” Correct. Added Angus: “We stopped being the New Democratic Party of Canada some time and we became a leader-driven movement.” Correct again.

In June an Angus Reid report summarized how tough the situation is for the NDP. “When (voters are) asked if they would consider the NDP in a future election, just 13% of Canadians say this is ‘definitely’ something they will do.” Just 13 per cent of Canadians, a staggeringly sad collapse for a once great party.

Jagmeet Singh was the worst leader in the history of the New Democratic Party of Canada, and it is not good for Canada that the party of such historic significance is in pieces.

Charlie Angus, a longtime NDP MP who didn’t run in the last election, said the election results were a “wake-up call” for the NDP and for organized labour.

Angus said the connection between organized labour and the NDP has been challenged and that party organizers are less “in tune” as they’re focused on data and now rarely come from union halls.

“We were probably both taking each other for granted,” Angus said, noting that the NDP was founded to give working class people political representation. “I think we strayed from that mission.”

CTV News had some heavy hitting articles and opinion pieces over the weekend going after the NDP, their complete lack of direction (or rather wrong direction) and Singh and pretty much taking the union worker vote for granted. We are a couple of weeks away from parliament back in session, and the party is effectively neutered with no signs of rejuvenation anytime soon.

What's interesting is just how vocal Charlie Angus has been, extremely critical of the NDP and Singh while also not running last election and announcing his retirement. Is he planning to go back? The way he's so vocal, it almost seems like he had a major falling out with the party organizers and not seeing eye to eye with the party direction.

Front runner pool is...mediocre? Who is the one candidate to most likely to bring back the party from the abyss?

Can we contract out to Jim Henson's Creature Shop and use AI to bring back Jack Layton? He's the only reason the federal party was relevant at any point in the last twenty years.

I wonder if Rachel Notley would run. I feel like she has legit governing experience, and some credibility from running an NDP party that won something. Might not be far enough left for the voters in a federal NDP leadership race though.

I don’t believe that decision rests solely on the party leader.

I also disagree that doing so would give them any certainty of outcome.

For the past 2 elections even though they were running against the deplorables, it was still hard to stomach casting a vote of the NDP... Yes i know they aren't real "NDP" so why not take that out of the equation?

The 2nd best thing other than Pierre Mini Trump getting decimated and losing his seat was seeing anti-oil Singh get booted too.

The announcement spells the end to Northvolt's highly touted, but controversial, plan to build a $7-billion plant in Saint-Basile-le-Grand and McMasterville in the Montérégie region. The Quebec government had supported the proposal and changed its own rules, allowing the project to bypass an environmental review.

Quebec had invested $510 million in the project, saying it would create 3,000 jobs in the area and make Quebec a battery producing powerhouse.

The investments included a $240-million guaranteed loan and a $270-million investment in Northvolt Batteries North America's parent company.

Quebec officially lost that $270-million investment, Fréchette said in a news release. Northvolt declared bankruptcy in Sweden in March.

Their rules for getting candidate signatures is interesting. How do you check that somebody has met a threshold for these individual parameters? Do they include their attributes with their signature or are there different signature buckets to fill within the application?

6. The Applicant shall provide the completed Nomination Signature Form to the Leadership Vote Committee by the deadline identified by the CEO. The Nomination Signature Form must be duly signed by five hundred (500) members in good standing of the New Democratic Party. The Party may set up an electronic system to facilitate this process.
