Denny's on 17th Ave SW (old BP location) closed a couple weeks ago.

Beyond the businesses cited in the article you have also lost the Circle K, Vietnamese Rest near the gym, Cookie Occasion, the cycling store (which was a food market before that and at one point I think a scuba diving place). There's others I'm forgetting.

I used to go to the Safeway in Garrison, and then pop by the liquore store, and sometimes the nearby butcher. I stopped doing that and go to Killarney instead, meaning I'm no longer supporting any of those businesses I used to pop into.

And you also have other dynamics. Lack of parking so people started to park in the complex with the gym where Casablance video used to be. So then they started to really ramp up the parking patrol of that lot, and ticketing people like crazy.

Just a series of really bad decisions and it has simply gone on far too long. A lot of people tolerated it for a while, to try and support the small businesses, but after a while it's become too frustrating and you stop going.
My friend expanded his Naked Leaf store in Kensington to Marda Loop. There was no foot traffic and it didn’t last long.

Not sure Doodle Dogs is a great business model.

Why are there so many dental clinics opening up in the city? Half my junk mail is from dentists. Are our teeth that bad from the lack of fluoride?

Probably indicates the fee guide is too high.

I thought about the dental plan before I posted that, and I was being facetious about the fluoride comment. How long has the dental plan been in place - two years? A lot of the dentists must be foreign trained or our universities started pumping out dentists like crazy. Perhaps they did as they were expecting a wave of retirement. Anyhow, lots of new dental clinics opening these days.

Meta AI says: Calgary is seeing many new dental clinics because of its growing population, which creates increased demand for services, and the prevalence of corporate dental groups acquiring practices.

I think that last part, where Big Dentistry is vacuuming up all the soon to be retired one-dentist practices, so new graduates are taking the plunge and hanging up their own shingle.

The final phase of the dental plan that included the most number of eligible recipients was only opened up late this spring.

This is likely the biggest reason. Canadian universities have not increased enrolment.
As was mentioned, large dental corps are buying up practices which likely drives new dentists to start from scratch. Definitley a lot of new practices, not sure how it will work out in the long term. For example, the Royal Oak area around the Shoppers Drug Mart and WalMart has six practices!
Corporate dentistry is the worst thing to happen to dentistry in the last 20 years IMO.

Just look at what happened to the vet industry.

When health care is run solely by profit margins, ultimately nothing good comes of it. When the dentist/owner isn't around, quality of care goes down and overtreatment goes up to make the profit goal.
The veterinary profession is a perfect example of what can happen, although a correction seems to be slowly happening. More private vet clinics/hospitals are opening and are attracting a lot of clients that are fed up with VCA and the other big groups.

Dentists weren't run by profit margins before?

I used to go to a dentist in Mission, he wanted me to get braces because my bottom teeth and top teeth alignment were off by 1mm. That's when I stopped going to him.

Definitely and still are, but not to the degree that corporate owned offices are. When one of the largest dental corporations is listed on the TSX, should be a red flag. The other large one has a significant investment from one of the largest dental corps in the US and Peloton Capital.
They aren't necessarily looking out for the patient first. You don't produce to their expectations, they aren't happy. Only one way to make that up.
