Staples would definitely piss in it, but it wouldn't be by mistake.

His answers about the contract sound a lot like what Gaudreau was saying before he left Calgary.

When you could go almost anywhere else in the league for even a paltry $100M in addition to what you’ve already earned?

I mentioned it is the trade and speculation thread, but apparently the 2 mutts podcast, which some people think is a reliable source, said that there are 4 teams interested in signing Hart and the Oilers are one of them. He has been practicing somewhere in Alberta and apparently looks good according to people who are watching. It was speculated that within the next couple of weeks the NHL is going to set the schedule for what the Team Canada 5 need to do to return.
I have no doubt that the Oilers are interested. I suspect they are saying there are 4 teams interested just so that when they sign him, they can pretend that he turned down other offer to sign with them and that they aren't the only team who thought it was morally acceptable.

They also want to pretend that he turned down those other offers and signed with the Oilers because they're the greatest team that ever existed and that he wants to play on the same team as McDavid and win a Cup because they're so awesome. Cup parade back on, baby!

All other ENG nonsense aside...Oilers sucking, etc. I think McDavid would have to be absolutely high not to have a contract going into the season. Whatever the case may be.
And I mean 'Edmonton Public Transit Cornucopia Cocktail' high.
They play the guy countless minutes a night, double-shift him, he looks like a meth addict by Christmas and, I hate to be the bearer of Bad News but 'Father Time' comes for us all, whether thats a slow-down in production, injury, lost time, etc.
You get an unsigned McDavid being played 25+ minutes a night under those circumstances? The odds of him getting hurt? I'm all for 'betting on yourself' but those are extreme circumstances and maybe they dont know if the levels will kill him, but all that for what? 400 Rubles?
Wait, wrong thing.
Either way, if I were him, I would not be going into a season without some sort of backup or guarantee.

If he wants to stay in Edmonton it's a gamble, if he wants to test free agency then there is only one way to do it.

It would have to be pretty catastrophic of an injury to impact his value next July 1st, plus he probably has his own insurance so he can hedge his bets. It's a gamble, but not that high of a risk IMO.

Going into the season without a contract is gonna be a massive distraction for their team. Can’t wait to watch them crash and burn out of the gate as a result.

Celebrated Square Root Day

Yeah, if McDavid tested free agency, he will have every team in the league considering what they could do to free up cap space if they figured they had a shot at him, and will get almost any amount he wants (he may take less than max if a team he wants to go to can't fit $19mil but could make $16 work, for example).
It would be a historic free agent available, so even a serious season ending injury that could possibly even bleed into next season a bit isn't stopping the runaway train of teams offering the max they can afford to sign him. It would have to be grave, like serious spinal or neck injury with his future playing career in doubt.

How much less than 100% effort does he put out during the regular season if he's protecting himself for free agency?
