Also, why board us on time when Calgary's runway restrictions mean we are sitting on tarmac an extra 40 minutes before we are cleared for takeoff?

Because the 'on time' metrics dont include sitting on the tarmac time.

I only do it if the person directly behind has also reclined.

It’s easier when you consider that the space is allocated for you to use how you like, same as the people in front of you and behind you. There is x centimetres behind your seat that’s yours and x centimetres in front of you that belongs to the guy in front of you. Once you learn to cope with this reality you don’t have to feel guilty about reclining or get butt-hurt about somebody reclining in the row ahead.

Example:
Dad - I should run out grab us a nice bottle of whiskey
Wife - I could run out for you guys
Dad Immediately - That sounds great, thanks! Let me get my wallet
Wife - Oh no its okay, I can get it
Dad - Even better! Send a picture from the liquor store and we'll let you know which one to grab.

My wife went and was flabbergasted that she actually ended up doing 40 minutes of driving and dropping 60$ on a bottle of whiskey she wasn't going to drink. Not upset, but just wondering wtf happened as 99% of people will say oh no, thanks for the offer but its fine.

I don't think that's the runway, last few nights Calgary's been on a ground delay program. ATC shortage

If you want to recline your seat just recline your seat. Don't make some insane space allocation argument to justify it.

Recline if you want to recline, they're built for it.

If you're upset that you lost leg room get a seat with more legroom.

What doesn’t make sense? Just accept the seat in front of you can move back and the space it can recline into was never yours to begin with so why begrudge anybody that wants to recline?

I bring a long wooden dowel and wedge it between the seats.

I don’t care about reclining my seat, I am just giving a perspective on why the person in the row behind shouldn’t take offence to it or complain and why you shouldn’t feel hesitant about doing it. Like was said already, this is how it was designed so no reason not take advantage of it.

Some aren't a big deal, but I've had others the basically put the person's head in your lap. Those suck. I've also found recent ones are more comfortable upright, or with a minor recline.
A full recline isn't comfy.

I don’t care if a person reclines their seat, but if you are going to recline, recline it and keep it reclined. My gear grinder are the seats that don’t lock in the reclined position. The button unlocks the seat from the upright position and your body weight keeps it in the reclined position, as long as you are always leaning back. It can be like sitting behind someone in a rocking chair.

It's not lost leg room. It's when the persons seat is practically in your face. When getting up from my seat I have to grab the headrest and that usually gets the attention of the person ahead of me.

The vast majority don't recline for that reason.

Oh god, that's a grinder. People grabbing and yanking the headrest as they get up for the 13th time. Use your armrest.

Exactly, the reclined position of the seat is the default position as you can sleep a little better. It just isn’t as safe for landing and is inconvenient for loading and unloading.

I’m on a boat tour (glass bottom shipwreck tour) and there are 4 dogs coming aboard. Why?

Because 3 dogs would be unlucky. Maritime superstition demands even numbers

My company policy doesn't allow us to purchase premium seats so I have to rely on upgrades based on my status or hope I can snag the exit row.

I'm big, so if someone reclines in front of me when I'm in economy class, it's awful for me. But I'm sure there are many guys jealous of my height, so I take it in stride.
