This, to me, is the most damning evidence:
At the start of the 2007 calendar year, Bell said, there were 10 straight games in which Donaghy was part of the officiating crew and the point spread moved a point and a half or more before tip-off, indicating big money had been wagered on the game. In those 10 contests, according to Bell, the big money won all 10 times.
Considering how closely Vegas monitors betting irregularities, it's a wonder this didn't come to light sooner.

For someone who's been one of Stern's biggest critics I thought he did a hell of a job at his Press Confrence today. Could never see Bettman adress the media in such an honest strait forward way. Can only imagine how tough this last week must've been for him

The issue of garbage officiating in the NBA is a longstanding one. The only thing possible to save face for the NBA would be to fire all current crud reffing today. That would leave them with about 5 or 6 descent refs.

On FOX Sports Radio this morning they were calling on the league to fire ALL current refs.
"Sometimes you have to burn the whole crop to get rid of the locusts," was the quote. Seems extreme but how else does the league recover its credibility?

For those of you thinking he bet on games because he didnt get paid enough.
"Donaghy earned US$260,000 as a referee this past season, Stern said."
$260K a year for working maybe 100 days a year is pretty damn god if you ask me. The NBA, like the NHL pays for or reimburses officials for travel expenses.

I'm just wondering who the whistle blower was in this case.

Yeah it definitely wasn't because he earned enough. It was because he had a gambling problem. And a gambling problem typically has little to do with your salary. Plus having that debt to the mod is never good either.

I wish I could get paid $260K to run up and dow na court and make bad calls all game
On the news this morning they were saying there are FBI agenst outside of his house because of death threats and they showed his house and it was freakin MASSIVE!
He has a problem and it didn't matter if he made $26/hr or $260K/yr he was going to bet on these games and for him to know the outcome (or at least help it to his advantage) made it a "sure thing" for him.
The NBA is going to be a trouble after this because now every fan or even semi fan is going to wonder when watching their team if this is another one of those games that are fixed.
They should redo the finals Come on it would be exciting and I can only watch so much baseball through out the summer

The problem is that they don't have 20 professionally qualified refs sitting around looking for work. Also if I was a ref, and was clean, and I part of the burnt crop ... I'm suing.

As a semi fan I have always held the NBA in a lower light than the other major leagues from a credibility perspective. For years I thought that the games were manufactured to a small extent to the benefit of the stars.
Who knows about the long term, but for me, the NBA is a complete write off, I may keep track of who's winning in the playoffs, but will never buy another ticket or watch much on TV. Stick to March Madness I guess.

Just to update this story, Donaghy now claims that he has information on 20 other refs who were involved in betting.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2979605
Not necessarily betting on the NBA or even on pro-sports; but regardless, it could force the NBA to suspend a whole lot of their officials if the allegations turn out to be true. More likely, this is somebody just willing to spout random names to try to save his own skin.

Just when it looks like this issue was going to get swept under the carpet, it is going to explode.
