I felt sharp pain in my right flank last Sunday night for about 20 minutes. I got out of bed and stood up for a while. The pain subsided, and I didn’t think much of it. Next day I went for a long strenuous hike and did fine for my age.

When I got home the pain returned and my urine was the color of cola. I went to Emergency right away, and was really uncomfortable. They took some blood, and examined me, and determined most likely I was passing a kidney stone (not an infection). I was prescribed Flomax, an antibiotic and tylenol. Never had one before, but knew it could become very painful. Talked to friends and read more about it online. Was scared to hear the pain of passing the stone could be worse than child birth.

I missed work for a few days. Waves of pain and discomfort came every few hours as the stone travelled towards the bladder. Thursday morning I went for a scan, and it was confirmed a 4 mm stone was approaching my bladder.

Yesterday I easily passed a stone with no pain. It seemed smaller than 4 mm and I wondered if more was to come. I think now that was it, and I am in the clear.

I’m grateful for the care from the hospital, and from friends and co-wowrkers. I’m lucky it wasn’t much worse.

I’d be interested to hear the experience of others.
I’ve passed a bunch of stones and it sucks, mine was caused by a very odd issue.

Not sure why or how this happened but somehow I had scar tissue in my pisser just barely downstream of my bladder. I went to the doc a few times over a 7 year period and they couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t pee, and when I felt like I had to go I needed to pee within about a minute or else…tragedy. Doctors only took a urine sample that showed nothing.

Finally I had enough and went to the doc again and demanded to see a urologist, that’s when they found it like 90% blocked. Not being able to empty your bladder causes whatever minerals to back up your urinary system and develop stones. I’ve probably had a dozen or so in that 7 years.

It also made it tough to have a kid, so I ended up getting a f****** gnarly procedure done to have the scar tissue removed. After all was said and done, I glued my wife to the ceiling one night and she was pregnant within about a month.

Nah, not over sharing. We're all getting older here and it's good to learn from each other. Glad to hear it wasn't super terrible.

This could partially go in the WRGMG thread, but alas… yesterday coming back from Kelowna I thought since it’s about 6pm, maybe we’ll check if it’s possible to check out Lake Louise. After I get off the highway, I immediately see the “Parking Lot Full” sign and think “damn, well it’ll be a pain to turn around and there’s lots of cars going the other direction so we’ll just risk it or hoof it if there’s no nearby lake shore parking. We finally get down and there’s some Parks staff directing traffic and I then think they’ll probably think I am dumbass for ignoring the parking full sign, but there was actually a crapload of parking spots despite it all. Though the parking area seems a lot smaller than I remember it years ago when I last went. They could also totally add a second level without it being obnoxious.

So, I am just happy we got to enjoy LL after capping off a week of showing our exchange student around Alberta and BC.

I'd be interested to hear how long your wait at Emergency was in rural southern Alberta.

In and out in two hours with kidney stone diagnosis.

Earlier this summer I waited four hours to have fishing hook removed from finger.

Don't tell people from the city what you wait time was. Or they will start bogging down your local hospital.

20 years ago living in the southwest we always went to Okotoks emergency instead of any of the Calgary ones. Even still I always take a look at the estimated times and will drive to Ft Sask or Devon if the wait times are dramatically lower.

People from Calgary are coming to High River to use our emergency because they can get in quicker.

My kid stepped on a piece of metal on a Koocanusa beach a few years ago. Fernie hospital was like 20 minutes to get stitches.

Some dink poured a bunch of sheet metal and broken glass on the beach, we collected two coolers full of it.
