It depends... He signed his current deal in the summer of 2017, but it didn't start until 2018-19.

When he signed it, the cap was $75 million, so his $12.5 cap hit was 16.67% of the cap. When it started, the cap was $79.5 million, so his cap was 15.72% of the cap.

  • The cap for 2025-26 is $95.5 million. 16.67% of that is $15.91 million.
  • The cap for 2026-27 has already been announced and will be $104 million. 15.72% of that is $16.35 million.
  • If he asked for 16.67% of next year's cap, it would be $17.33 million.

Draisaitl's $14 million is the highest cap hit in the NHL this season.

I can't see it less than $16 mil. Remember the last go round, the fart sniffing media floated the idea of his last deal would be at $15 mil/year, so when it was announced at $12.5 mil it looked like a discount. I am thinking we start hearing rumours of $18-20 mil, and he will sign in the 16.5-17.5 range.

Edit: Much depends on the term, of course.

His last contract was never reported as $15M. It was $13.25M

Corey Pronman of the Athletic is ranking NHL pipelines for all 32 teams. Looks like the Coilers are locking down 31st spot with virtually no talent in their pipeline:

The second-to-worst pipeline still has two legit pro prospects in Matthew Savoie and Isaac Howard, who should materially help the Oilers soon. The issue is that after them, there is next to nothing in this farm system.

2024 ranking: 30

2025 NHL Draft grade: C

I remember being sure that the 7mill rumor for Nurse was them trying to make people happy with like 6.5, which would've still been a huge overpayment. But then, well...

I don't really have any issues with Pronman as some people do. I will, however, take great offence at his grade here. The 31st team in the NHL is graded as a C? How? LoL I guess in Pronman's classroom, everyone passes!

I'm going to guess that Pronman puts the Flames at #9.
He isn't as high on some of the Flames prospects, and seems to be more skeptical of smaller guys. And we have to keep in mind this is not a ranking of farm systems, but rather, any player in an organization under 23 years.

So Coronato should be included but not Zary or Wolf or for that matter Jeremie Poirier, or Yan Kuznetzov.

He is almost certainly looking for contract in excess of $100M with the promise of endorsement opportunities at about the same level. The wife of a guy pulling ~$30M / year isn't opening a Bar that will probably net her 100s of thousands / year as a business. She is doing it as a hobby and like all hobbies if you can afford the startup costs (see her husbands salary), then the hobby is portable.

I doubt it weights on their decision much at all.

She is also an interior designer by trade, so her interest in the bar was probably more related setting it up and making it look pretty than running it. At the end of the day she'd probably be happier with a blank piece of paper and a new bar location than running the bar in perpetuity. But that's just speculation.

That was my immediate reaction as well, but on re-read he was grading their most recent draft as a "C", not the whole pipeline.

Maybe. Would not be shocked if he puts them around 14.

Slight exaggeration, as the max was $14.6.
