I go Loob here. 181st overall pick who had a 50 goal seasons and 3 other 30 goal seasons. Entire career as a Flame. I would also put Suter ahead of Tkachuck.

Curious to see where Fox lands.

He is a Norris winner and amongst the best D of his generations. That's a hell of a pick in round 3, even if he never played a game as a Flame.

It probably is Fox at this point, individually he’s probably the best player on this list despite being a complete tool.

Again you might want to compare Suter & Fox stats. Suter is so underrated because he played with MacInnis. I remember one season where Chopper got hurt and Suter stepped up and was so good. I know Fox won a Norris but would he still of won that Norris if he played at the same time as MacInnis, Bourque, or Coffey. I highly doubt it, Suter is really under appreciated.

Let’s bring out the Wolf. His number will be in the rafters one day.

Tkachuk.

When you think about it, Columbus, Edmonton and Vancouver all whiffed on selecting him that year.

Chucky isn't recency bias. He would have dominated on that '89 team. Loved Suter (until the cross-check) and Loob was my second favourite Flame (after Vernie) as a kid... but neither of them have ever impacted an entire organization the way Chucky has. I think #7 is the perfect spot for him (with the previous 6 rightfully ahead).

How so? On the forward depth chart, we would behind Gilmour, Loob, Mullen, Roberts, and Nieuwendyk.

Nieuwy and Killer were Cs, so it could have been...

Loob Nieuwy Mullen
Roberts Killer Chucky

Patty Otto Theo
Ranheim Hrdina Makarov

Lanny, Pepper, Hunter, etc were pretty much rotating pieces by that time. I feel like I'm missing someone though... Tonelli was gone the year before... not sure. Chucky would easily slot into that top 6 though. Theo was a rookie who I'm pretty sure had worked his way up to the 3rd line in the playoffs...

Edit: Actually, if memory serves, I think Roberts didn't actually become Roberts until after we won the Cup? Like, he was good but he wasn't 50-goal good until some of the guys had already left. Also Chucky would have looked like one of the better skaters in the league back then lol.

Edit 2: My memory's messed up a bit. Makarov might have been the following year. Also Ranheim seems more like the 90s... although I might have him mixed up with Titov (who was definitely in the 90s). Honestly, it's a blur after the top 3 lines.

Edit 3: Just looked up the roster. I completely forgot about Berezan! Also Mark Hunter... and Pepper played alot more than I remembered. I remember him on the OT goal vs Van (obv) and then I remember him raising the Cup in his pjs, but he actually played 22 playoff games lol. Also, yeah - no Makarov and Ranheim played a handful of regular season games. Hrdina is surprising though, only 6 playoff games. Anyway, Looooob and Roberts were 20-goal guys that season. Tkachuk would have easily fit into the top six. In fact, he and Loob would probably swap spots:

Chucky Nieuwy Mullen
Roberts Gilmour Loob

(that makes way more sense too, because I'm pretty sure Loob was a RW even though the roster just says "F.")

Suter for me, given draft position, contribution to the team, career stats, and tenure with the team. I forgot that he won the Calder as well.

Seriously, having MacInnis and Suter as our 1-2 punch on defense in those days was amazing.

But we're not talking him against the 89 team. We're talking all time draft picks. He's not better than Nilsson, Loob, Makarov, Suter or Reinhart in terms of skill level, IMO. And most of those guys outpointed him as well.

The list of NHL defenceman with 90 point seasons is pretty short. Gary Suter as a Flame is on that list. Him and Loob for where they were drafted and what they did for the Flames are miles ahead of Maga Tkachuck.

Only two players in the history of the NHL have scored 50 goals in an NHL season while accumulating over 200 penalty minutes. Was just hitting his prime as a PPG player in three straight seasons when the neck injury that cost him the better part of three years. One of the toughest and meanest of players to ever put on the Flames jersey. That's where my vote is going.
