There is hope that he's smarter than we think as he hasn't re-signed in Edmonton yet.

Plus, he can always be traded. He can sign for 8 years, then tell Dumpsville that they have 3 years to get a cup and gives them a list of teams he'd be willing to go to after that, they'd get a haul for him.

This is very true, but I'd also be thinking..."do I want 20% of the current salary cap or do I want 20% of the salary cap as it going to be in 3-4 years?"
Those projections are looking pretty nice...

For sure. The plus to signing long term is the certainty vs the risk of major injury in those next 3-4 years.

I wonder how much of his wife's business interests there impact him not leaving soon. She just opened up that bar for snobs and you just know that Edmonton being Edmonton, the minute McDavid leaves town, there will be bricks going through the windows and the business is done. They don't handle their #### well there.

Mavi Diary - day 27
Dear diary. My secret is out thanks to my stupid brother. Like all brothers, he just couldn’t zip it. It’s true that I’m a GarageBand maestro and mix master. I recorded tasty beats that I stored on the home computer and now he drives around listening to them and ratting me out to faceless internet hacks.
Lauren and I set up the lights in the basketball court at home and some underpowered speakers and the disco ball and we dance together like a high school dance. We put my song on auto repeat so that we don’t get distracted by other music. I had Luke gadzic chaperone us. He’s Lauren’s cousin so he enforced the dance distance between us until we were married. He was a better chaperone than hockey player that’s for sure! I sure appreciate him more now though as an additional cheerleader on my personal network Sportsnet.
I also saw a 2015 rating of top 100 oilers. I’m beside myself about it. I was rated 7B. That’s right, “b”. I didn’t even get my own number. I had to be behind 7A Kevin Lowe. And I actually wasn’t even on the original list!! I guess they had to squeeze Marc Andre Bergeron into position 100, and I’m a good team guy, but who is Pat Price or Igor Ulanov?
It makes me want to not sign with the oilers again at all.
See you later Diary.

But also a chance he loses a step or sustains a real knee injury that limits his speed and then he is just slightly above average. He wouldn’t be worth the 20% at that time.

And, he can have a "gentlemen's" agreement with Katz, that when he chooses to go, the Oilers trade him for something like a first and a salary dump.
That might be the sweet spot between maximizing his income, his chance to win and his loyalty. And in the other side, Katz gets to keep his golden ticket for a few more years.

There is no negotiation to be had. McDavid will be given whatever contract he wants.
All this waiting is him choosing if he wants to leave.
