			Joe Nieuwendyk for me.

Not many 2nd rounders come out of college and instantly give a challenging hockey team a 2nd line.

If this is just about the picks and not their Flames legacies, it has to be Brett Hull no? Hall of fame and all over the record books for goal scoring.

I was thinking the same. Niewy was great but Hull was a generational goal-scorer. It's even more impressive considering where he was drafted.

			Brett Hull.

6th round pick that goes on to win 2 Cups, Hart trophy, 3 time first team All Star and scores over 700 goals.

Not all that close IMO.

I know someone that played with him in Penticton. He had some bad habits shall we say.

Tough to figure this one out.

Nieuwendyk was a phenomenal center. One of the big reasons Calgary won a cup. He took a tonne of abuse in front of the net too, and was only two goals shy of Bossy's record. Not bad for a 2nd round pick!

Kent Nilsson as a 4th round pick (4th rounds certainly seem lucky in this organization, don't they?). He was lazy, but boy was he talented. I still think he was by far the most talented Flame of all time, and when he was interested, he was by far the best Flame of all time. He was rarely interested though, but he is still the record holder for most points in a season with 131. Ironically, there was only ever one Swede to have ever scored 50 goals in a season, and it wasn't "The Magic Man" - he was one shy in his best season (as a Flame too!) with 49. Crazy.

Loob - the only Swede to have ever scored 50 in a season. Those Loob chants were legendary, as was the long "Loooooooob" sign. 9th round pick? He was so fun to watch.

Brett Hull is probably my choice here too. He was picked in the 6th round, and was a generational goal scorer - though really it was only 3 'crazy' years, followed by just a very long and productive career. Still, that's a hell of a career overall.

I am still undecided. LoL Trying to decide from impact on the Flames vs Total career vs pick #. I will have to chew on this one, but those are the top 4 for me here.

the bad- this was all accomplished in a 5 year window that ended 40 years ago

If it's any solace, I'm pretty sure Chucky's on his way to the Hall eventually. Most likely a first-ballot inductee. Bennett might sneak in on a 3rd or 4th ballot too.

It's hard to give full credit for drafting Hully. I'm pretty sure we took him in the 5th or 6th round, in spite of his legendary bloodline. I remember he was like 2 goals per game in juniors that season too. He was a fatty though, so it's not like we spotted a diamond in the rough that no one else knew about, we were just the ones who were like "OK fine, we'll throw a flier out the window and take Bobby's kid."

You can pretty much ignore everyone drafted outside of the first two rounds then.

They all turned out, but weren't drafted high enough for the drafting team to take any credit.

Loob, Fleury, Gaudreau, Suter ... all of them.

Anyone not drafted high with skill has warts, and that's still true today.

Well no, there's (to me at least) a difference between a researched and scouted late-round find that wasn't on anyone's radar, and the well-known son of a legendary hockey player who fell to the bottom of the draft because he was out of shape and didn't really show any commitment to the sport. We even shipped him off to STL halfway into his rookie season.

Don't get me wrong, Hull wasn't doing himself any favours with his lack of motivation along the way...

They all turned out, but weren't drafted high enough for the drafting team to take any credit.

Loob, Fleury, Gaudreau, Suter ... all of them.

Anyone not drafted high with skill has warts, and that's still true today.

With Gaudreau specifically, he was well known for his skill. It wasn't like no one knew who he was at the time, at least not people who followed prospects. I think he was on every team's radar. It was just a matter of what point do you take the risk on a smaller player. It's not like the Flames pulled a fast one or had some scouting knowledge no other team had.

I think the Flames really capitalized on harvesting players from the U.S. college circuit back in the 80s though, back when a lot of teams weren't focusing their attention there as much, so picking guys like Suter, Nieuwendyk, and signing Otto as an undrafted college player where really astute moves at the time.

We even shipped him off to STL halfway into his rookie season.

Don't get me wrong, Hull wasn't doing himself any favours with his lack of motivation along the way...

Not sure I see a difference.

Hull wasn't drafted earlier because of concerns. Commitment, level of opposition.

Pretty much the story of every late round find or they would have been drafted earlier.

Fleury Suter, and Gaudreau too small. Makarov unattainable. Loob didn't have the stats, and likely surprised them as much as anyone.
