I went to college in Ottawa and stayed there for a couple of years afterwards. I really enjoyed my time there. Very nice, quiet city. Along with all of the things mentioned above, I’d also recommend a visit to the Elgin St. Diner for amazing poutine. They also have a great arts & music scene. The Manx pub is a nice cozy place to get a beer.

Pfft please. I have a degree in finding places. Maybe this game with the kids is more about myself!

I was most recently in Ottawa a year ago and the city is surprisingly edgy. Lots of homeless and junkies, and not just in Byward Market. But also lots of artsy places, funky people, and some buzzy nightlife spots. There was a bit of a Shoreditch vibe. I came across some sort of small outdoor rave downtown and it was pretty fun.

The National Gallery is underrated. If you have a few hours, head there.

Rideau grounds are great.

Hull has (had) some nice spots - you will be over there for the Canadian Museum. Soif Bar à vin is a great wine bar!

It's about a 30 minute drive from downtown Ottawa on the Quebec side, but the Mont Cascades water park is a fun day with kids. The pools are heated and they have the best lazy river. The countryside and villages around that area are really nice as well.

As far as museums go, I like the Museum of Civilization.

There are also so good "haunted" street tours which are fun with kids IMO.

I lived in Ottawa for 4 years so have a few suggestions.

1) Parliament Hill - make sure you book a tour as this inside of the buildings is cool, although I'm not sure exactly where tours go these days with all the construction. If they still offer an East Block tour, I'd highly recommend you do that in addition to the main tour if you've got an historical bent. They have Sir John A's office and Trudeau I's cabinet meeting room setup like they were in their respective eras.

It's also worth just wandering the grounds as well, depending on what's going on with the construction.

2) If you have a rental car (or even if you don't an uber/cab shouldn't be too bad as its only 20-30 minutes away) go to the Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park. It's beautiful (both the estate and the Gatineau Hills), plus you'll learn all about our longest serving PM and his ... unusual ... spiritual beliefs. It's also close to the town of Chelsea, which is a cool little town with good restaurants.

Bonus - go to Champlain Lookout in Gatineau Park if it's a clear day - awesome views of the Ottawa river valley and it's a nice drive.

3) Museums - Ottawa has tons of high quality museums, not just the main ones (Civilization and War museums). The Nature Museum is a cool building to see and geared towards kids, the National Gallery is great if you like art. Here's the full list, they're all really good even if the sizes vary.

https://ottawatourism.ca/en/ottawa-i...tional-museums

4) Ottawa has cool architecture so it's worth walking around. If you're staying at the Fairmont, you could do a couple really cool walks. One would be to go down past the locks, behind parliament then back up the other side of parliament hill and back along wellington. Another is down the canal and then back through centre town and the glebe along the main roads.

5) Food - Ottawa has a good food scene if you do a bit of research on what places are decent.

Have a good trip.

Parliament Hill was neat. I remember becoming emotional when I saw the Manitoba seal at the eternal flame. I am emotional person though, so, your mileage will vary.

I took a tour of Parliament, loved it. Get a car and drive to the strippers in Gatineau for a full contact dance.

Do they allow minors or should I just get my wife to wait in the car with them?

Set them up with a guided tour somewhere in Ottawa, I don't think they'd wanna go. Pigale's isn't a high class joint.

Obvious answer is obvious but make sure you crack the windows. Ottawa summer is hot.

Go during the day and just tell them you're going to a museum they will hate. Matinee prices are better anyway and you can check for lipstick marks more easily once you're back in daylight.

The National Gallery is amazeballs. One of my favorite places on Earth.

Beautiful around Parliament Hill. Tour the House of Commons and Supreme Court if possible. Tickets can sell out fast in Summer:

Byward Market is great.

In winter, skate the Rideau Canal.

Montreal is about 2 hours away.

The national gallery is worth a visit for sure.

The National museum of nature is sublime, they have a sub adult blue whale skeleton that is still huge, and a tone of other amazing displays.
