How can conjecture be the reason to dismiss an argument and be the entire counter argument in the same post?

Very obvious? Based on what?

We know how both this ownership group, and Darryl Sutter operate.
Trading Monahan instead of Lucic saved ownership 5M dollars in cash. That's the biggest factor. We also know the type of player and attributes that Sutter prefers in his bottom six, and the relationship he had with Lucic.

Ugh. Can we get some player movement finally there NHL? Anything...anything will do. I thought the arbitration hearing were coming up soon. That was the next point in time where we could hope to see some trades.

Taking a while to get to 5000

No hearings this year. Nic Robertson settled before hand and he was the last one.

Just seen the hearings ended August 4th.
What a lame duck off season.

Sutter saw Monahan as captain material. I doubt he would've wanted to keep Lucic over Monahan

I agree with your points, and that makes it possible.
But certainly not "very obvious".

This. There is zero doubt this is what transpired.

It pains me to think we could have kept Monahan and sold Huberdeau for a huge amount that summer.

I recall it very clearly from the time but I can't find anything at the moment to back that up.

Yet here were few on the board who thought they should move Huberdeau.
And once you kept Huberdeau, the Monny trade to sign Kadri made sense.
The rebuild at that time is simply hindsight by the large majority of posters.

Speaking of lame ducks. McTavish has not re-signed in Anaheim yet....sounds like Verbeek is dead set on a bridge, which is obviously a sticking point for the player.
It would be worth the stab by Conroy to finally grab a young, skilled center even at the 6 x 9M AAV compensation (a 1st 2nd and 3rd rounder) that I don't believe the Ducks may have a hard time matching on principle. The Flames have enough picks to withstand that and will recoup much of that in an Andersson deal at some point.

IMO after the Holloway/Broberg scenario the ducks will match any offer sheet and proceed to trade him elsewhere after if the player goes that way.
But, the rumor is that he also wants to stay in Anaheim. So he might not be motivated to sign any offer sheet. Can you blame him? Being a rich young athlete in California is probably one of the top lifestyles on earth.

Even if this team was somehow basement level bad they would still lose the lottery, and with players like Wolf, Kadri, Huberdeau, Backlund, Weegar, Coronato, Parekh and Coleman...they just aren't bottoming out.

You can't trade them for a year, so that would be an awkward season...

I would for McTavish but then again I think we are going to be very competitive this year and that puck will be in the 20's. Including the 2026 1st with lottery protection? I do that all day for a guy drafted that high with that pedigree

Contextually (for you) we picked up the 3rd or 4th most important player on a cup winner, who prior to that one season had a reputation as... frankly... a loser. That's why he was run out of Toronto.
|
Avs don't win the cup without Kadri...in fact they lose in round 2

If the Flames kept Monahan the most likely, almost for sure scenario would be he would miss most of the season and then sign elsewhere as a UFA.
People are forgetting (as usual) that Montreal re-signed the guy when he was headed to UFA before flipping him. Also, stat padding no defence Montreal that year helped them fleece the Jets for a first
