He wasn't a valuable center when he was traded. He had negative trade value.
The deal made sense because the team was trying to compete still. That was perhaps the mistake - but it was the reality of where they were at. And with that mindset in place, they absolutely needed a guy like him.
But Monahan being one of the best centres we drafted is irrelevant. What is relevant is his value at the time. Which was negative.
As others have suggested, what will matter to some degree is what you eventually get for Kadri when he is traded. Then the value exchange is the years of service you got from him + that return v. the value of the 1st Montreal got + the 1 year of service they got from Monahan.
Trading a mid 1st round pick for your best forward isn't a bad deal.
Also everyone can thanks Lucic for why it was Monahan that was traded.

Which in a round about way makes this all James Neal's fault!
Although that too does circle back to...yeah I don't have to say it.

Negative value at the time... maybe in the one month window where he was traded? Montreal got a 1st for him a year later. A year before we could have expected more than a 1st for him in a trade. Choosing the absolute lowest value possible to trade a player does not make that his absolute value. It was a decision, and a mighty stupid one.

They didn't have a choice. They needed to clear space to sign the guy they felt was important to compete - which was their priority. The choice was not to sign Kadri. Which I guess they could have made, but again, given the strategy they had chosen, that would have left them short a key player.
He only played 25 games that season for Montreal. That was the issue. Allocating cap to a guy that couldn't play.
He wasn't traded until Feb 2022 (not a year later as you say) and only after he re-signed with Montreal as a UFA. So that's irrelevant as it assumes he would have re-signed in Calgary, which is an unknown.

He pretty much had two broken human seasons to conclude his Flames career so I wouldn't say it was a one month window.

Hindsight is easy. I don’t think anybody had a big problem with it at the time.
At least we didn’t trade Monahan, a 1st, and Coronato for JT Miller.

Kadri has been amazing as a Flame so far and we don't have him if we didn't trade Monahan.
Monahan was looking like he would never stay healthy for a few years before the trade.
When we trade Kadri, it will be interesting to see what we get.
Montreal who was in full tank mode took Monahan and got a 1st and then traded him and got a 1st. This is something you can do when you have many open roster spot. That kind of value added for Montreal is something I wish we could manage to do. There is often a Monahan available for a pick and often you can get a pick for that player later. Might be too late for the Flames to do this now, but Montreal is looking very good right now to make the leap to a contender.

Monahan was broken at that time. Very unfortunate, but true. I wonder if there was a way to LTIR him to the end of his contract, that might have been a better course.

There wasn't, he said he was "healthier than he had been in years" that summer and played the start of the season
Carey Price went on LTIR and gave the Habs 10M in cap space when most teams had none or worse...Montreal also extended Monahan a year, they didn't trade him a year later or under the contract he signed with the Flames.
Obviously nobody in the NHL wanted to take Monahan for less. Kadri is worth more than a 1st right now so although not ideal the Flames are really still ahead on those series of trasactions.

Wow, people have selective memories. People slagged Monahan a lot on here well before he was traded. People said he was (a) irreparably injured; (b) carried by Gaudreau and was never that good; (c) not a good centre because he didn't dangle or skate fast. I defended him a bit and got mocked.

They were very wrong about Monahan. I mean aside from the injuries. No debate could be has about his injuries. But really all they did was slow him down. Maybe the only player I wish they kept. He should have been the captain.

Monahan has been gone for 3 seasons and has played 157 of 247 games...he played one for year and got paid again but its not like he has been an iron man since he left

My main concern at that time was if he wrists were basically f'd thus taking away his primary skill - scoring goals.
I'm thrilled he has made it back but he is a guy that still has only played 25, 49, 34 and 54 games since the trade.
It's hard for NHL teams to allocate cap and roster spaces to a guy they don't know will be in the lineup.

If Kadri was worth more than a 1st, I think he would have been traded already. But I guess you never know.

Lol selective memories! Y'all. I know people around here were bashing Monahan. I was one of the only ones not doing so, and was rallying against the idea of dumping him daily. I remember it well.

If the Flames trade Kadri for a 1st, the deal is a wash. I understand why we did it at the time although the value seemed way to high (was thinking a 2nd would do - but I'm not in the room and obviously it didn't). For a 1st, I would've expected Lucic and his 2 years to be dealt away to be honest (however, since it wasn't Lucic - I assume that wasn't on the table either).
Either way......I would take a 2nd to take on Prices contract after Sept 1st - especially since it's only like 1MM+ in real dollars.

He blocked it
