Sounds like Dreger was on the nose on this.

This is in no way shape or form the same as Iginla if this drags out. We had the one most incompetent and pompous GM’s in league history running things for those years, and he only reemerged from the OReilly fiasco because he had to get something for Iginla and Bouwmeester. After the way Conroy was treated and forced to basically retire, players wanted nothing to do with him, and ownership and executive management knew they had to cut ties with the guy too…said GM at that point had no one supporting him, so blame for the Iginla saga was placed by said GM on the player out of spite towards the organization more than anything.
You can write Jay Feaster's name. He's not Candyman.

Are you factoring that in?
Everyone's opinion will vary on return, but for me:
1. 2023 was touted as a very good draft in the first round, so picks were valuable that year
2. Two Dmen in similar age range and ability changed hands.
3. The players from that draft are now 20yrs old, and would fit nicely with our new core. The players we get for any picks Andersson is traded for now are 17/18yrs old.

MARCH 1: Ottawa Senators acquire defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 1st-round pick in 2023 NHL Draft, a 2nd-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a 2nd-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

MARCH 1: Vancouver Canucks acquire defenseman Filip Hronek and a 4th-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a conditional 1st-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and 2nd-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Also I think we could've gotten something better than this for Markstrom at the time too:
MARCH 1: Columbus Blue Jackets acquire goalie Jonathan Quick, a conditional 1st-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a 3rd-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and goalie Joonas Korpisalo.

Anyway...Andersson will be traded, and we can't go back.

The next issues I see for the team:
Backlund - why isn't he extended? Why no talk of extension? Is he going to be a one jersey player, or does he actually want to win? Since the team hasn't bottomed out yet, it'll be an interesting call.

Yeah....not sure what CC is doing here, do you really want the headaches and distractions of him at training camp. Trade him , get a couple of 2nd round picks if a late first is not on the table.

I realize i was thinking of the wrong year. I was thinking of the 2024 trade deadline. I don't think trading Rasmus was on the radar at all in 2023.

Backlund I think will be a deadline thing. If they aren't in the race, they will ask him if he wants to go, or if he wants to stay here to break the all games record for the club. That's how Steinberg sees it playing out and keep it in mind that he and Backlund are tight.

Yeah, they were always going to the give the team another chance. No way he was going to be traded in 23.

Not surprised. He was never going to sign an extension just anywhere. It was always going to be 2-3 teams. My favourite was some on cp saying he could sign in Buffalo because Swedish dahlin plays there. Lol

My guess it’s going to be a 2026 trade for a 1st and b prospect. Can’t see any bubble team or worse trading for him knowing he won’t sign.

Given Dreger has always had good intel from any team Dave Nonis works for, I don't think anyone should have doubted that the Kings had made an offer but Andersson wasn't interested in signing long-term with the Kings.

The only doubt is with Dreger calling it a "blow your socks off" offer.

Well. Fair enough to Andersson for being choosey about where he wants to raise his family.

Just sucks that there always seems to be some kind of double edged sword to the Flames players who are being shopped.

Still hopeful they find a trade before camp opens.

My guess, is he will do the same thing Hannafin did, pout, play like crap and accept a trade, play like crap and get traded again.

Lindholm didn’t get traded again. He signed as a FA with the Bruins. Hanifin definitely didn’t get traded again either.

I think the problem with a trade now is teams have made their plans, and everyone is undefeated in 2025-26.

Once some teams start off slowly or get some injuries, there may suddenly be some teams needing a quality defenseman more urgently than now.

Plenty of teams will get jumpy after a slow start or an injury.
Andersson's been a very good Flame and deserves some say in where he lands. You could also say it's negotiated into his contract.
The Flames and Andersson not seeing eye-to-eye on a deal doesn't make anybody wrong or greedy. Sometimes there's just not a fit and nobody's to blame.

Not saying that i necessarily disagree with this, but it would be such a Calgary Flames thing to trade him for the best possible return right now and see a career year from him (playing for a contract and all that) then get flipped at the deadline for more than what we received. Maybe you just have to do it and turn the page.

Maybe the trade could have been based on the condition that Rasmus is signed long term and Conroy asked him if that's doable and Rasmus said "No, not there".

At that point it would have been pointless to try and pursue it further.

I think the blow your socks off was referencing the contract offfer to Andersson, not the return in trade.

Believe based on some info that our insiders reported, the return from LA included a goalie prospect, which is really something we don’t need more of. If the return was their 2025 pick, we probably would have selected potter with it and we ended up getting potter with the Florida pick.

Prepared as others are for him to start the season here at this point. Maybe an injury et training camp will force a team to pony up and pay the price GMCC has set but could be a deadline deal. Who knows.
