They don't. It's just called that so they can tax you without you getting upset.

I just took Air Canada this past week for the first time in years. Yeah I was really unimpressed with them, was a noticeable drop from WestJet & Porter. Even the plane itself seemed worse/tight. Prickly FA's too, and you have to pay for everything. No free juice or coffee even like other airlines, pay up loser. I'm avoiding them going forward.
On a side note, sick disgusting people on planes GMG. There were 2 different people on my flight to Toronto with a brutal, deep chest cough, just hacking away with no mask. Sure enough, by day 3 (I was there for 8 days) I start developing symptoms. The following day, my buddy I was visiting gets it too, it's a bad one. Basically killed the trip, I'm still dealing with it. So many degenerates out there who just don't give a ####.

Okay, I'll play Devil's Advocate a little here.
I'll fully agree that they should do the courtesy of wearing masks, but a flight to a destination isn't as easy as calling in sick to work. There are a whole chain of events usually proceeding from that, whether its connections, hotels, obligations, all kinds of things, its not easy to just 're-schedule because you're sick.'
Not to mention...just re-booking the flight itself is a giant pain in the ass!
They should have a 'Quarantine Zone' at the back. Just one row of seats completely Haz-Mat sealed off to be used at the jurisdiction of the FAs!
"Was that a hacking cough?? Get in the bubble Boy!! Get your ass in there! We'll roll your ass into Pearson!
But the fact remains that Planes are an unlimited cesspool of disease and will likely be the leading cause of the downfall of humanity. Them and Cruise Ships. The sooner we make peace with that the better off we'll be.
On another note, I have never had a rude or even impolite Flight Attendant ever. I dont know if thats some sort of miracle or what because that is a rough job.
They could make a movie, "Locke is a Flight Attendant for a Week" and the pull-quote would likely be:
"Well...he didn't kill a lot of people, but he didn't kill 'no' people either...so we're going to call that a 'win.'"

Oh I agree, but yeah at least make attempts to contain it. Just by the sound of it, you could tell they weren't even covering their mouths, just hacking into the air like animals. I can't even fathom doing something like that on a plane, people are so nasty.
Yeah I've been lucky with FAs too. Seems I'm always flying WestJet, I know people have horror stories of them, but I've been pretty lucky I guess. And their FAs are usually downright jovial. Not sure what the AC people's problem was both flights, but I did notice at the airport TV waiting for the flight home that they overwhelmingly just voted to strike. So something definitely has them unhappy.

I suspect people who have unpleasant experiences generally are unpleasant themselves. Almost brings it on them self.

One of my buddies is a WestJet flight attendant, and he may be the happiest person on earth. I'm dying to take a flight he's working on. Says his job is super easy, and has amazing perks. He's always off partying somewhere exotic for free. Its to the point where if I ever got laid off, I may seriously consider just doing that haha. And my quirky FA arse would be downright loveable.

My goal when I get on to a plane is to have the least amount of interaction with any other person on the plane as possible.
Add this to getting a really nice pair of Noise Cancelling headphones and ensuring I have a filled waterbottle when I get on, and I haven't had a "bad flight" in years.
I am confused about the maintenance comment though. In terms of quality of aircraft and cleanliness, I would rank Porter 1, AC 2, and WJ a distant 3rd. Always something wrong with the seat, the screen (if there is one anymore), an odor, or the heating/cooling.

I've got numerous clients who are Flight Attendants and I've heard the same stories. You'd think after a while it'd get tiresome or exhausting but hey, different strokes for different folks.
I remember one time running into a gaggle of FAs in the wild when I was on a trip and one recognized me from the flight and we got absorbed into their orbit for the evening and...those people party like the world is about to end.

There's no love lost between me and WestJet, but they're still miles ahead of AC despite trying their hardest to do worse and worse. And WJ is just flying their fleet into the ground, their planes are getting beat up pretty hard lately. But AC is miserable

Haha totally. My buddy who does it is ex-restaurant/bar industry, sounds like a lot of FA's come from that background. So yeah, lots of partying and hooking up with co-workers. Sounds glorious, though I don't think I could keep up. Dude's in his early 40s and still a party machine. Life goals..

I just had completely uneventful flights with United. Dr. Ativan helped a lot. I did get up to use the washroom at the end and people accosted me, they were announcing there was a passenger who has gotten up to use the washroom during landing. I was totally out of it with headphones and didn't hear it. Sorry flight attendant. I'm like "oh sorry" and scurried back to my seat.

Not really sure why this was necessary..also, you could theoretically say it for almost every gear grinder.
Granted I don't fly for work so the volume isn't the same, but including return flights, I've probably flown 30+ times this decade and it's almost always solid. I'm actually surprised at how many WestJet complaints I read on here, as they're always smooth sailing for me (knock on wood). But sure, let's chalk up an isolated surprising drop in quality experience with Air Canada as me randomly being miserable on that flight..
My ADHD-laden arse gets restless on long flights, so I usually take edibles before I fly. Trust me, I'm usually chill as hell on flights lol

Interestingly, I'd say....95+% of my flights are smooth.
Once I'm on the plane and going.
Its the process of getting to that point that is usually the biggest bitch.
Once I'm in my seat, I've got...whatever entertainment they've got, plus my own backup, plus a book, plus a puzzle book, plus my own water bottle...you usually dont have to worry about me.

I more just mean free flights to cool places. Goes to Tokyo/London/Cancun/Costa all the time where they go party. Plus the per diem. I'm sure he has to dive into his own money afterwards, but still an amazing perk if travel is a priority for you and you're single.
