Yeah, but if they want to play in the WHL, which is often the only chance for talented young players to advance their careers, they are forced to play for the team that holds their rights. In what other industry is a sixteen year old in grade ten forced to relocate from Brandon, Manitoba, to Portland, Oregon, which is in a different country and about 2500 kms away, just to play hockey?
This is why I love seeing the WHL crumble. Players like this now have the choice to stay in high school and then get paid a proper wage to play for a US college team instead. Money talks and BS walks, and if Canada is too cheap to pay, these kids have another option now.

Kids have always had the choice to stay in high school and then play for a US college team.
Your whole take on this is hilarious.

I don't ever do this, but time to call for a ban on this troll due to his anti-Canadian rhetoric. Enough with any leniency on this site, for people like this.
If you like the states so much more, go and post your drivel on an American fan site.

Not to mention, if the WHL or any CHL league was to disappear, the next job opportunity for a lot of those kids will be asking people if they want fries with that. Most are not getting accepted to college because there are only so many spot available. These leagues are a huge opportunity for many players to develop their skills and follow their dreams. If they disappeared, it's not like there is something to replace it.
My first "career" job was a virtually unpaid internship in a small town I had never been to and had to move 1,000+ km to in order to have. My next job I applied for a position in Vancouver but was offered the job in Prince George (almost 700 km away). It's just a fact that many people have to go to where the opportunity is being offered if they want to pursue their career goals. It's not something exclusive to hockey players.

Anti-Canadian rhetoric? I'm a proud Canadian, I'm just not blind to our country's faults or unable to accept criticism. The biggest critic of this new system that allows NCAA players to be paid for their NIL is...Trump.

And now that freedom is there and the chl is going to become a feeder league due to their gluttony.
Fanboy talk is funny unless you talk to the players and parents. Love the romance of a draft, i get it.

It's an interesting time my kid was drafted to the Q last year later round pick and a early 2nd round pick in the JR A draft
Growing up around the Q that was always his goal so he wasn't concerned about NCAA and last year he played 3 preseason games knowing he would lose his eligibility before the change. He was fine with playing either in the Q or Jr A and then Usports.
He is headed off to camp next week and the team has signed a bunch of US kids Most of these US kids already have NCAA commitments for next year so likely one and done. and this certainly may effect his opportunity to make the team this year but a few kids have left and gone to NCAA opening some spots.
The other side of the coin though is that now that the US is open to him and that he is an excellent student those opportunities are opening up to him going the other way. He is being recruited by a few of the Ivy league schools and we are working down the path to picking one of those.
It's an interesting time for sure and ultimately more choice for the kids is always a good thing.

It is a good thing that kids don't have to decide at 15 if they want to avoid playing in a WHL preseason game and lose their NCAA options. Even kids who are good students who play in the CHL until they are 19, now might have the option to attend a US school that didn't exist before if they grow as a hockey player or student.
Hopefully your kid can end up at an Ivy League schools and get that type of education.

I wonder if the CHL might increase the amount of imports allowed to play on each team, even though they just upped it to 3, to offset these potential losses of talent.
