I agree they would want to win now. The 3 way with Dallas makes a lot of sense. Zary as a piece makes sense. Would the Ducks have interest in Andersson? Andersson+Zary+1st is a strong offer.

I could see them being interested in a guy like Robertson to add to their emerging young group for sure. Zary and Andersson...not as much. But as you and others mention maybe there is a fit with a multiple team transaction that works.

After camp, videos, and comments etc... I am thinking we need to keep Mews. I think he's got an it factor to him that other prospects lack outside of Parekh.
I use to favor trading him over Brzutewicz but now I've reversed. I think we should dangle Brzu as a RD add to a trade. Great player, nothing against him at all. I just see room for only one of he or Mews on the team in the future and I think I'm leaning back towards Mews lately.
1st+Zary+Brzu may be our 1st+Ryder+Kostitsyn, but I think it has potential.
McTavish though? I don't know why Anaheim would be interested in D pieces... I almost think it still requires us selling Rasmus for pieces and using those to add to Zary+ 1st to make it appealing enough.

I still think the only reason that McTavish's name is even out there is because of Robertson.
I highly doubt he's getting shopped unless it's for a true upgrade at forward.

I haven’t followed along as closely as I’d like but this is interesting. First I’ve seen of preferring Mews over Brzutewicz. You think Mews will end up the better player?

Worth noting Mews isn't signed. Brz is.
Bird in the hand and all that.

Mews is also a pure offensive D man whereas Brz is trending toward a very solid two way D man.

Brzustewicz put up better numbers in junior, in their D+1 years than Mews did. And Brz has continued to progress well, and looked solid in camp last year, as well as during his trial with the team at the end of the year. So he has better numbers, AND more progression.
If I have to give up one of them in trade, it would be Mews, not Brz

I think Brz is ready for NHL full-time action by the New Year. Quite crucial to move Andersson so he gets in. I didn't follow rookie development camp so can't speak to Mews other than he has huge legs.
If he has Brz type value around the league, he is a no-brainer trade chip IMO.

Here is a comparison of their D+1 seasons in the OHL...
Mews.: 68G, 14-68-82... great!
Brzust: 67G, 13-79-92... elite!
Parekh: 61G, 33-74-107... inzayne!!!

And we have them all, these RHD!
If we can flip Mews in a package for a McTavish - that's optimal use of assets and why it doesn't hurt to stack up in 1 position if that's how the draft falls.

I think Mews has more holes in his game and isn’t as good at either end of the ice. Still one of our better prospects on D, but I struggle to see him as more than a 2nd pairing support piece who will need a great defensive defenceman at his side if he hits his potential.
|
Hope you're wrong about Mews but agree on Brz, I've been high on him ever since we acquired him and feel like he's been a little overlooked by some of the fanbase after we drafted Parekh.
Extra bonus if he becomes a hell of a player since we got him from Vancouver too.

Bzru had the exact same defensive warts going into last season as Mews has now. He worked hard on them at the beginning of last season and came out a much better player, but there's potential that Mews does the same. I think his NCAA route is intriguing for that reason.
The contract is another reason that Bzru might have slightly more value than Mews today in a trade too.
Finally, I think the window of use is another interesting point. Bzru is ready next season... maybe we want a little bit more runway if we're still building something here.
Ultimately, I think it would be wise to use one of them in a trade in the near term. I have largely favored Brzu for the exact reasons listed here, but I took a few things from camp and the afterwards that made me change my mind:
1. Mews seems very tight with our core prospects. Fit and glue are important.
2. Mews has an almost arrogant level confidence. I think he can back it up though. IMO this is part of that "it" factor.
3. I think he has untapped defensive potential that can be taught. His skating is already superb though.
4. Those legs. Holy moly. Lol.

Outside of his world juniors, I have not watched much or noticed much from McTavish in NHL so I don’t really know what McTavish projects to be as a player. If the flames end up giving up the kind of assets being discussed like Zary + Mews + 1st round pick, I would want the flames to be confident McTavish has the skills to be a puck-carrying, playmaking center who skates well and can take over games. Not saying he would be a player that does that every night (that would make him a franchise centre)… but is he a play-driver?
Any comparables for what he could develop into? Is he a Monahan type centre? And Lindholm type centre? A Bennett (Florida Bennett) type center?

Google AI compares him to Kadri. I think his ceiling is higher than that

He’s not much of a play-driver unfortunately, more of a net-focused power forward. I do see a lot of parallels to Monahan, but with a two-way conscience. He’s a clutch performer, a winner, and a difference-maker.

Kadri is an excellent skater. Earlier in this thread McTavish’s skating was described as ‘average-ish’.

Ideally your #2 center. I don't think it solves for the #1 center gap, but long-term the Flames need both. Reschny could also be a #2 but that remains to be seen. I'm confident McTavish is at least that.

I think when he hits his prime, he’ll be good for 80-90 points. With the right wingers, he could easily slot in as your #1C, perhaps a bit like a Scheifele.
