As a senior I have zero problems with paying taxes. I'm not rich by any means nor am I living in poverty. We all have to pay our fair share and that includes old codgers like me. I find the idea of saying that we shouldn't pay to be insulting.

Property taxes adhere to the property, the age of the owner is irrelevant. If you can’t afford the taxes you had better sell.

I don’t think that seniors (I am one) should be tax exempt. We use city services and should help pay. What’s next? Schools? I don’t have kids in school. Should I be exempt from school taxes? I don’t use the rec centres or public transit. Should I except from paying for those?

According to financial projections my income tax rate when I retire will end up being something like 8%. I'm not going to complain.

Still better than lending money to a family member.

Choices are limited if they want to stay where they are.

I was driving today, and the car in front of me had a black Alberta plate with white borders. The license plate number is "HON" or "HOM".

It looks like a new plate, not one of those vintage ones., as it is on a Tesla.

Anyone know what that is?

There is a vehicle in the parkade at my office that has a retro looking yellow Alberta plate. I don't know why exactly but that yellow plate looks awesome.

That doesn’t sound bad at all. 10 years in free taxes for less than 20% of your house.

Well, as an update they apparently had a RIF which they had not really been drawing from. I was quite confused when they said they went and just withdrew enough money for the next year of loan payments. Sigh. I also recommended a bunch of changes they could make lifestyle-wise, getting a cheaper internet plan, getting rid of a car they only use for short commutes in the city where transit is really easy to use (and a bus stop in front of their house).

Will see how that all goes.

Another random question for the day - my son managed to get a co-op term at a defence contractor in Canada and needs a low-level security clearance. However the form asks for his last place of residence with government-issued proof. He’s just a student so he didn’t update any of his id while going back and forth between out-of-province school and Calgary every few months.

Anybody familiar with this kind of thing? I am sure there is something since this company takes in lots of co-op students but the form was pretty clear about “place of residence” not just “permanent address”.

Oh great...so now National Defence Contractors are stooping to hiring address-less vagrants...the bare minimum of requirements is 'dont be homeless.'

Just got a new credit card. We have the standard $15,000 limit but we’ll be charged if we exceed it.

Is that standard? Every card we’ve had doesn’t allow you to exceed the limit but doesn’t charge for overages.

It’s TD. We don’t bank there; just got their card.

Like an overdraft charge? That sounds more like a debit card.
Servus issued me a new card that is debit/credit, it works like a debit card in Canada and switches to a credit card outside the country. I don’t use it because I prefer to make up my own mind. I use credit for everything and pay it off at month end.

It looks like it's a pretty standard $29 fee for going over your limit now on Canadian credit cards. I also wasn't aware this was a thing and just thought they'd decline the transaction if you didn't have enough room.

I assumed as you did that overages would be declined but the TD rep said it’s pretty standard now.

Interest charges can also push you over the limit and trigger the additional charge. With a $15,000 limit if you are right around the max balance the monthly interest charge would be around $300 and would push the balance over $15K which would add the extra $29 fee.

We automate so never pay interest but thanks for the warning.
