But, he's not an idiot, he's a professional journalist.
Everything I've seen has been him reporting facts.
Suff like:
A complaint was filed.
Hockey Canada investigated.
Hockey Canada paid a settlement.
Allegations have been made.
Those aren't opinions, they aren't up for dispute. You absolutely cannot sue someone for reporting facts.

You can once you kill freedom of the press. Which would be a disaster on its own.

My impression is there is a very small fraction of people celebrating this.

She also testified he wasn’t very helpful when she went back to look for her ring. So at that point, she wasn’t being prevented from leaving.

The whole ring thing and returning to the room to look for it was one of the things that was weird as well. It the original police report she said it was her grandmother's ring which then you might be able to justify why she might go back to the scene where she was raped and just wanted to get away. But then during the trial, it was mentioned that it wasn't her grandmother's ring but cheap costume jewelry. She denied saying it was ever her grandmother's ring and didn't know why that was in the original report.
Just one more thing that the judge had to think about when considering whether or not her statements were reliable.

Careful now, a certain poster is gonna come along and tell you that this sort of behaviour is why he's more pro-rape than he used to be...
Thankfully he is in the minority.
I share your disgust with those that are celebrating this like it's some sort of victory, but there are a lot less of them than there are those of us with empathy. Block those who are outing themselves and move on.

There is no easy answer. But we know what societies where accusations of serious crimes easily lead to convictions look like, and it’s worse than what our legal system yields. The burden of proof for serious crimes is high for a reason.
|
Thousands? How many in a he said she said scenario, with no corroborating evidence?

Less than half (43%) of sexual assault incidents reported to police resulted in a charge being laid; of these, half (49%) proceeded to court; of which just over half (55%) led to a conviction; of which just over half (56%) were sentenced to custody in a correctional centre.
Only one in five (21%) cases of sexual assaults reported to police in Canada results with a trial.
Only one in nine (11.5%) cases of sexual assaults reported to police in Canada results with a conviction.
Only one in fifteen (6.5%) cases of sexual assaults reported to police in Canada results with the perpetrator being sentenced with jail time.

I sadly learned in MeToo that at least half the women I know have been sexually assaulted.

Watched the lawyer press conference clips from both sides. What a nightmare the whole situation was for everyone involved.
Per my previous comment a lot of bad decision making that night on the part of all parties involved ruined a lot of lives. Hopefully others learn from it.

Not that it's surprises me (just like the verdict), but reading the attitudes of many on this forum makes me relieved I do not have a daughter. I honestly feel bad for some of you and your wives/blow up dolls/etc.

Otherwise, any of us could be charged and convicted of sexually assaulting someone else, even if we had never met them, just based on their testimony. Of course, that’s not what happened in this case, and I can understand the anger at the acquittals. In my opinion, the things that everyone agrees happened were at the very minimum abusive and misogynistic. But the Crown couldn’t prove that they were non-consensual. It would be far worse if the prosecution could get convictions without adequate evidence.

Suing people is not that difficult. I bet the players lawyer's have looked into this. What comes out of it? Not sure. More well-versed lawyers on the board can advise.
|
That's not grounds for a lawsuit.
You would have to demonstrate that he slandered them or reported factually incorrect things. Do you have evidence he did that?
An argument can be made I suppose. But it's a poor one.
