Thousands of rapists are convicted a year. They don’t have a free pass.

There is no easy answer. But we know what societies where accusations of serious crimes easily lead to convictions look like, and it’s worse than what our legal system yields. The burden of proof for serious crimes is high for a reason.

I think his reporting effectively ended these players careers and the public pressure from the reporting got the crown to re-open the case and prosecute. An argument can be made.
Suing people is not that difficult. I bet the players lawyer's have looked into this. What comes out of it? Not sure. More well-versed lawyers on the board can advise.

Fool don't you know! For accurately reporting on something that happened in a professional and unbiased manner. In other words, his job.

No, an argument can’t be made. That’s ridiculous.

These players barely had NHL careers to lose in the first place, teams are well within their rights to say they don't want them

If they didn't want their careers ruined for something they did which affects their image and employability, they shouldn't have done that thing.

Did he lie? Or shine a light on something that shows them in a bad light, but truthfully?
One can be sued for, the other, notsomuch (as far as I know)

I have no doubt it affected public perception, at least among those with poor media literacy. He took facts and interpreted in a biased way to draw conclusions. I don't think you can sue someone for that though.
I have no doubt that he is fighting the good fight. Whether or not what happened in this case was criminal, it exposed a lot of problems with hockey culture and Hockey Canada.

But it is not difficult to look at this situation through the players' eyes and not see a different perspective:

-You engage in, what you believe to be, consensual group sex (albeit in a frat boy environment that does not reflect well on any participant).
-You achieve your goal of making the NHL.
-Years later, you are accused of rape/sexual assault and your career disappears overnight based on an unproven accusation.
-You are publicly charged.
-Two years later, the courts determine you are not guilty. Regardless, the court of public opinion is strongly against you (as evidenced in this thread).
-The likelihood of re-entering the NHL, or recouping the lost millions in revenue is microscopic. For the rest of your life, people will associate you with sexual assault, even though the courts suggest otherwise.
Victim is maybe not the right word, but I do have empathy for the players, especially if it was a consensual event (which the court believes).
Basically no one won aside from a few lawyers. Not the players. Not EM. Not the crown.

What argument is that?
If Rick ever said "These guys sexually assaulted a woman" then yeah there is a case to be made.
But, he's not an idiot, he's a professional journalist.
Everything I've seen has been him reporting facts.
Suff like:
A complaint was filed.
Hockey Canada investigated.
Hockey Canada paid a settlement.
Allegations have been made.
Those aren't opinions, they aren't up for dispute. You absolutely cannot sue someone for reporting facts.
