They sure they want all those embellishment calls to be made on the oilers?

Mavi Diary - Day 18

Dear diary. Today I want to tell you about a team effort throughout the generations that continues to inspire me and makes me want to do more.

Banners.

They are the closest to winning things that I’ve come to in my career. Not division or conference titles or Stanley cup banners because I don’t have any of those, but banners that people day to day can rally around and take inspiration from, including other areas of life.

Fans as the 23rd player, consecutive sellouts, previous players (the game sure has changed because I meet those guys today and none of them look like they could play today if I challenged them, never mind being on the receiving end of a Leon reverse check), finalist banners, Garth brooks, other sports, and polls from anonymous people on the internet.

I’m hoping to get some banners for “most chosen by media”, “best broadcast team as voted by oiler fans”, “highest EA NHL ratings by a team”. Those would inspire me.

I’m also hoping to get my personal stuff up there too like “most minutes played in a season” and “most injuries recovered from” and “most coaches per decade”.

So my message to everyone and especially Sportsnet and TSN? Get those words of praise embroidered and into the rafters! At the very least, referees and opponents will be intimidated. Just like I am when I play in Vancouver with their fantastic banners.

Tomorrow diary.

Mavi Diary - Day 19

Dear diary. Today I want to talk about feet.

It’s a shame that I have to wear the same socks over and over. I don’t mean brand, I mean literally the same socks. Maybe I should canvas the world and we could do a sock exchange? People would send me their socks, and I would trade them socks with my face on them. The socks really look like me when you see them on a shelf, except for the ones where I’m smiling. Those are counterfeit socks.

When you put the socks with my face on though, my face turns into Bob Stauffer. Should I be worried about putting on a few summer pounds?

Without my special socks though, I’m worried that never again will I be celebrated for 27 crossovers in my own zone. The socks have special grippers in them and they have never been washed; Leon says they smell like the Jasper Avenue and 100th street sewers on a hot summer day. Leon is such a flatterer so I said “damn onions” and Leon and I hugged it out. He said later that he also had tears but thought it was the socks.

Speaking of unwashed. Have you seen principe’s feet? He never wears shoes. Sure, on tv he looks sharp as they only show his upper body but he never wears shoes. Proof? Does he ever step on the ice? Can you imagine the trails he would leave behind? He says that it’s healthier than wearing shoes and it helps him spread fertilizer without using a rake.

I dunno but he gets mad when you call him “hey Flintstone” but I think that’s because Fred at least tamed dinosaurs instead of working with them.

Laters D!

Soooo Kevin Lowe is the guest speaker at my PD day coming up....

Gimme a good E=NG question to ask. Like one that comes off as respectful, but subtly disrespectful. And go!

How about: "After the two finals losses, have you now learned a third thing about winning?"

It's funny but it's too on the nose and not something anyone would actually ask. You need to go the other way and use that quote, but reel him in

"Kevin, you've talked about knowing a thing or two about winning. Do you think that the current Oilers team, having lost two in a row, have learned about what it takes to win, or do they still have a thing or two they can still learn?

What did it feel like to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame alongside such luminaries as Dick Duff and Bernie Federko?

But you twist the pronunciation of winning just enough that some would question if you actually said whining.

I would ask if he thought the Flames would still have won the cup if Gretzky wasn't traded?

or

Does he hold a grudge against the Flames for ending their win streak?

or

Who was the hardest Flame to play against when they won the cup in 89?

Calling a dive in live action is very difficult. Even with video review, intent is hard to measure.

I would start with stating that the Oilers seem to be a team big on second chances. Then list:
Mactavish- vehicular homicide
Kane - lots of history and something bad enough to have contract terminated
Perry - same
Bowman - covered up the scandal
Etc...
The finish with a less subtle.
Most teams would find this unpalatable, but it seems to work for the Oilers. Would you agree?
