A few months ago I was at Piper’s in Pompano Beach (Florida of course) talking to a guy named Steve and his wife. Nice folks. He looked familiar but I just couldn’t place him. Then he joined the jam on stage.
It was Steve Harris. Nicko is around a lot as he lives here and has a rib place. Very rarely Bruce.
I don't think calling out a bad metal song is gatekeeping. That was a one note song with Lil Wayne all auto-tuned up. If you like it, great but it's as simplistic and disposable as today's pop music.

I think the only newish bands I've kind of sort of enjoyed recently have been Bad Omens and Poppy. Even then it's not my genre. I'm not a big break down guy. I love my upswings and build ups and thrash and blast beats.
Hell the last album I got really excited for was either the new cradle of filth or the new Darkest Hour. But now I see there's new Deftones.
I guess it's a sign I'm getting older now. I like to stay in my lane of Tool, Parkway Drive, Devil driver, Slayer, Cradle, In Flames, Darkest Hour, heck most of the "Gothenburg sound" bands. And the old tried and true Swedish hardcore punk Like Raised Fist.

If you like the Gothenburg sound, I'm curiouus to now if you've listened to the new Halo Effect?
I find they scratch the old melodic death metal itch. It's a lot of ex-In Flames members with Mikael Stanne on vocals (and even he's ex-In Flames too).

A few months ago I went on an all- day Tool binge. Just blasted it all day.
Next day my neighbor asks “Do you know who was playing all that horrendous music yesterday?”

I like the Halo Effect but to me it's kind of Dark Tranquility with a sprinkle of In Flames riffs thanks to Jesper Stromblad's writing. Not that it's a bad thing as I'm also a big fan of the Gothenburg era of bands.

I was speaking in general in reference to the post I quoted. You’re right that there’s not wrong with calling out something you don’t like.

That's the super band right? Inflames Dark Tranquility and some of At the gates of I'm not mistaken. I've listened to a couple.of songs but haven't really been in a position to really give them a honest rinse. They're good. How can they not be with that line up. Although Stanne can get a bit tiring vocally for me. Love DT but his lelodics are hit and miss.

I am totally gatekeeping when it comes to Sleep Token though. That is not metal, it's pure sh1t. I don't get the popularity at all, it is sooo bad.
They popup in my Youtube music while driving from time to time and I don't mind them, the music itself is fine. But I can't understand the fandom around them, I mean just look at this Youtube comment
Quote:
Sleep Token are more than a band, they’re an experience that borders on the religious. Seeing them live awakens something inside you…it’s unlike anything I’ve felt. This band saved my life.
It's a poppy prog-metal band with an overly pretentious lead singer, which is kinda standard for that genre. I guess that just hits harder when you're a 14-year old emo though
My death grind drummer son would call most stuff in this thread “soft” or “corporate”. Just his opinion.
He's kind of right, this thread definitely could use some more grindcore and death metal in it. On that note, how about the best grindcore song of all-time?

I've tried to get into them or at least understand what all the fuss is about, but I just can't. I really don't care whether they are metal or not, they just do nothing for me. And it pisses me off that both Youtube and Spotify keep trying to shove them down my throat.
on a broader scale though, I loathe "is band x metal or not" discussions. Who cares, really.
Tik Tok is what made Sleep Token really blow up. All the influencers started using the breakdown in the Summoning for their videos and throngs of mostly women started latching on to them. Romantasy books, mainly ACOTAR, was also blowing up at the time and Sleep Token fit the narrative perfectly of a band that supports that level of fantasy. It really is interesting. My wife and her friends became fans and we actually flew to Toronto to see them at Massey Hall. It wasnt a bad show by any means. But the crowd was extremely diverse. It was also funny that they had Empire State Bastards open for them. It was great to people watch while they were playing. So many people who showed up for the lore of Sleep Token didnt know what hit them.
The genre clearly peaked creatively a while ago, so when bands actually experiment and try new approaches I don't see the issue. Sometimes it's gonna flop, sometimes it's gonna produce good work.

With Ghost at least there's the early stuff while the last few albums have veered more into rock. Bottom line is that I find a lot of his music interesting so I listen to it. I listened to Even in Arcadia in its entirety and to me it's maybe soft/alternative rock or alternative pop music. I certainly didn't enjoy it but I will stop short of saying it's crap as it's simply not the kind of music I enjoy listening to. A lot of people seem to like it so good for them but to me I just have a hard time considering that metal music.
