Etienne. Probably the more complete player giving him a better chance at the nhl.

One is more finished with the higher floor. The other has probably gotten a higher offensive ceiling but a much lower floor.

Etienne the more complete player, Mews potentially has a very high ceiling.

I hope these guys are so good we have this debate for the next 10+ years!

Mews, very skilled, but less consistent than Morin, who also plays the body more and is more aware defensively (from reports that I've read).

Morin by a hair, but they're both close and one could easily surpass each other in their development.

I do wonder who will fare better this year. Morin on the Wranglers and Mews at Michigan. Both will be challenged by this next level, but I think Morin more so.

Mews by a hair.

Progression up vs flat

But mostly I just really liked his game at the u18s a couple years ago

I give the edge to Morin because of D play. If he can produce the way he is AND play great D, I like that more than just offense. Morin also had a good playoffs run.

I still think Morin has #1 pairing upside with a ceiling more like Giordano - a really complete 2-way defencemen that you can deploy in all situations. I really like Mews as well, but I do have Morin ahead of him simply because at this point, he is more in the vain of a Drew Doughty-type than an Erik Karlsson type (not that Mews is that poor defensively).

I have been voting Morin since round 6. I like his all around game, and the fact that he got called out by the development staff and took it to heart and put in a very good season. I think he will be one of the young leaders going forward.

I am certainly intrigued by Mews, there just seems to be something missing, I am not sure 100% what it is. I know he has a lot of work to do defensively and that is pretty normal for a young offensive minded defenseman, so I am not super worried about that. I do think going the NCAA route is going to be really good for him.

I've been trying to vote based on the highest ceiling, so I've got to go News.

I went with Morin because I think he's more well rounded.

Mews has the higher offensive upside, but I think Morin is the better overall dman.

Wonder if Morin is more committed this year when he gets to camp. Didn't get a look in any exhibition games last year when he came in out of shape and by some reports fell out of favor with management.

https://calgaryherald.com/sports/hoc...-etienne-morin

Quote:
“He has taken it up to a different level,” praised Ray Edwards, the Flames’ director of player development.

While you never would have eye-balled Morin and accused him of being out of shape, his testing scores heading into last season didn’t show the sort of progress that was expected. If the NHL is your aim, you can’t plateau before you turn pro.

When this young defenceman was reassigned in September to Moncton, left to explain to family and friends why he wasn’t tapped for a single exhibition audition, the Flames and Wildcats connected to come up with an ambitious workout plan.

About a month into the season, they cranked it up a little further, a nod to the commitment he was showing.

As Edwards told Postmedia while Morin was helping the Wildcats to a league championship and a trip to the Memorial Cup: “What Etienne did is he dug in and he did the work, and his game is reaping the benefits.”

Voted Mews for potential offensive upside. Either would be a good choice.

Wonder how many prospects are going to fizzle with the new CBA eliminating fitness testing.

No year to year gauge ... just optics on and off the ice

They did away with fitness testing? Wow. I mean I get it for maybe main roster pros but for prospects that's a tough one to swallow.

Not clear.

No preseason or in season testing in the CBA.

Who does it apply to? Does it count for rookie camp? Development camp?

My guess would be it only applies to members of the NHLPA, but not sure what the threshold for joining is.
