On 9 May, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the exposure of two agents – former soldiers of the Ukrainian army who had allegedly been recruited by Hungarian military intelligence. They were reportedly engaged in espionage activities in Zakarpattia, a region inhabited by several tens of thousands of ethnic Hungarians. Both individuals were detained and charged with high treason, an offence punishable by life imprisonment. Their alleged mission was reportedly to gather information on military facilities and equipment in the region, identify weaknesses in its defences, and monitor the political sentiment of the local population, including potential reactions in the event of an incursion by ‘Hungarian peacekeeping forces’. According to the SBU, Hungarian intelligence was also seeking to obtain data from the front line, including information on losses sustained by the Ukrainian armed forces.

The EU should immediately cut Hungary out until they get a change of government that more aligns with EU principles. Unfortunately, he has made it really hard for any opposition to beat him and has unlimited term limits. I would be fine if it was just a matter of opinion on how negotiations to end the war should go (even if I disagreed), but Orban is outright undermining Ukraine.

Derek was originally promised a job as a war correspondent, then as a mechanic in a repair battalion because of his experience as a welder.

Instead, his unit of foreigners is reportedly being trained, hastily, in Russian, for frontline combat.

“Unfortunately, he feels like he is being thrown to the wolves right now, and he is kind of having to lean on faith.”

The family solicited prayers and is petitioning unspecified public figures to have Derek reassigned.

His wife DeAnna also reported that Derek and the others in his unit were forced to “donate” 10,000 rubles for their own “supplies,” which took a substantial part of his paycheck.

His wife reported that she has not received any pay or bonus after one month.

In one of their videos, they said that one of their followers sent them some military equipment for boots and a helmet.

I hope they are enjoying those traditional conservative values they went there for.

I watched some their recent videos uploaded. It sounds like things aren't going great in general. They are still relying on charity to survive. The mother was offered a job but needs a car to get to work, but can't afford one (so prayers and donations please!). They are idiots and live in a richer neighbourhood without great transit options. Someone sent them a small instapot so they can make potato stew. There is another video of them touring a university and you can see that it is more of a propaganda video with local media taking their pictures. There is another video where the mom says she is struggling with addiction and loneliness.

I do feel really bad for the kids though.

I looked into them (the Feenstra family from Saskatchewan).

I actually have to give them some credit because they seemed to go in with eyes wide open. The most recent reports after some initial issues navigating the bureaucracy, are that they are happy and just moving on with their lives, and don't want any attention. When they first got there, they were griping over having their funds frozen while they were under investigation and the lack of assistance they were able to get in English. It was obviously a difficult immigration process. Some people want the kind structure and society like Russia. The main grievance against Canada is that family farming is getting more difficult and their dream was they their kids can one day be farmers. The Nizhniy Novgorod region in Russia has been really aggressive in luring foreign farmers to the area with cheap land and the family was able to get right into it quickly (purchased 280 acres, built a home, and started a company).

Their other beef of course was that their faith (Mennonite or some other strict Dutch Reform sect I believe) is strongly anti-LGBTQ+ and they wanted to go to a country where that didn't exist as much. I meet and hear about so many people who hate Canada and sing the praises of countries like Russia, China, Iran, etc... and I always think, then why are you here and not there? Just go. So I have to give the Feenstra family credit for doing what the other big talkers won't do.

With the Huffman family from Texas, they really seemed to believe that they were going to be freer in Russia and treated like heroes. They wanted some kind of fame and attention. They went there with no provisions or plans really, and just thought people would support them. Seeing the regret seep into their videos is hilarious.
