We don't have the money to fix it properly, so band-aid fixes are all we're going to get, take it or leave it.

Really can't do that without building a basketweave. That traffic already has to merge into traffic right away, and then move another lane left by McKnight.

Here's my ideas:

Exit from NB Deerfoot to 32nd Ave - revise so that traffic using this exit has to exit at 16th, then go straight through the light there.

Deerfoot/16 Interchange: Flyover ramps for WB-SB and SB-EB. Revise at grade intersection light timings to take in account traffic pattern changes.

32nd Ave onto NB Deerfoot & NB ramp to McKnight EB: Basketweave built

McKnight onto NB Deerfoot: continuous lane until 64th Ave exit. The project in the SB lanes between 64th and McKnight increased the number of lanes from 3 to 5. The same could be done for the NB lanes.

Extra lane all along NB.

SB Deerfoot: 5th lane between McKnight and 32nd, as well as between 32nd and 16th, and between 16th and Memorial. 4 lanes under the overpasses.

Memorial onto SB Deerfoot: Basketweave

17th Ave onto NB Deerfoot: Basketweave

Don't forget the massive dual lane basketweave required at Deerfoot / Southland / Anderson / Bow Bottom.

Those flyover would be crazy expensive as the ramps would need to go on top of each other, more realistic would be opposing flyovers of EB-NB in addition to the WB-SB, no?

In my dreams they build Alberta's first full stack there.

1 elevated ramp to make southbound Southland merge south of Anderson.

Problem solved.

No room for that, for most of the length. Plus you would literally have to rebuild the entire road, including every interchange.

Along the same lines, my idea is to have Anderson/BB have dedicated exit lanes that seperate just before the Southland overpass, and then have the traffic from Southland exit after that point.

Not sure if it could be done, but if traffic could exit 1/3 of the way over the overpass, you could do it with a ramp instead of having to build another bridge.

True, but you still need to deal with traffic wanting to go from Southland to BowBottom somehow. It's a very messy situation, which is likely one of the main reasons it hasn't been dealt with.

Even if it does magically speed up traffic somehow, it will just make the Glenmore squeeze that much worse.

This is just a bandaid and probably won't be worth the 2 years of sheer construction hell. At least we will have the ring road....nevermind.
I you look at the plans they are removing the lane drop northbound after Anderson.

From earlier this year: most dangerous intersections in canada based on annual collision lists. Deerfoot made number 2 and 5

Canada's most dangerous intersections

1) Vancouver: Knight St & Knight Street Bridge and SE Marine Dr & SE Marine Dr Offramp & SE Marine Dr Onramp
2) Calgary: Deerfoot and 16th Ave NE
3) Winnipeg: Kenaston Blvd and McGillivrary Blvd
4) Winnipeg: Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street
5) Calgary: Glenmore Trail and Deerfoot Interchange
6) Montreal: Highway 40 and Stinson
7) Winnipeg: Grant Avenue and Kenaston Blvd
8) Montreal: Dickson and Notre Dame
9) Montreal: Highway 15 and De Salaberry
10) Vancouver: Burrard Street & Burrard Street Bridge and and Pacific Street & Pacific Street Onramp and Offramp
11) Vancouver: East 1st Avenue & East 1st Avenue offramp & East 1st Avenue onramp and Rupert Street Offramp and TransCanada Highway
12) Toronto: Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue East
13) Toronto: Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East
14) Toronto: McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East
15) Edmonton: Yellowhead Trail and 127th Street
16) Edmonton: 107th Avenue and 142nd Street
17) Edmonton: 90th Ave NW and 85 Street NW
18) Ottawa: Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive
19) Ottawa: Belfast Road and St. Laurent Boulevard
20) Ottawa: Baseline Road and Woodroffe Avenue

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/most-dan...171556681.html

It's based on data between 2002 and 2004 but most of these intersections haven't changed a whole lot.

I wonder how they compiled those numbers. For example, if it's total accidents- those numbers aren't too bad. If it's accidents per 100,000 vehicles, then that's telling.

#4- Winnipeg: Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street. That intersection is comperable to MacLeod and 58th ave. I would expect Deerfoot and 16th to have more accidents; there are many times more vehicles passing through.

#3- Winnipeg: Kenaston Blvd and McGillivrary Blvd. This one would be comperable to John Laurie and Sarcee. Busier intersection, but still not as many cars as Deerfoot and Glenmore.

I think most of those collisions for Deerfoot and 16th happen on the WB section of 16th on the east side of the interchange; usually in the left hand side, where people run in to each other on the approach to the traffic lights...

I've been complaining that Deerfoot needs Bridges in the weave lanes there, ever since I started working in the SE.

Those intersections are just too close together for weave lanes.

Those long hills don't help either when it gets icy. Westbound down the hill seems the steepest too. Combine that with lots of lights in the same line of sight and a high proportion of out-of-towners using that intersection and yeah that's why its bad. The ring road should help with the last one though.

A twelve year thread bump due to a serious collision on Deerfoot, of which there's been hundreds of in that 12 year span is certainly a choice.
