That's not bad. 2x6.5? Extremely movable when the times comes.

Well they killed his trade value now and will likely get a rental price next deadline or walk him to UFA. Unless he signs an extension I guess.

I still think they trade him before the 2nd year kicks in, maybe even before this season begins.
It will be interesting to see what trade protection he has.

I'm pretty sure there is no trade protection allowed for a players RFA years.

I thought RFA years couldn't have trade protection...

Pretty brutal scenario for all involved.
I wonder what their asking price was... obviously it was too high, but did they lower it to avoid this situation of walking Byram to UFA and potentially losing him for nothing?
Now that the door is open for him to become a 26 year old UFA... once Makar and Hughes leave the market he would be next up for a big pay day. It will be unlikely he signs an extension with anyone.

Likely just a trade contract. Start negotiating with teams now saying you get two full years of negotiation with him, plus two full years of very reasonable AAV for playoff runs at the very least.

This is why I don’t understand why some people get so worked up over signing players instead of trading them. It’s just another way to manage the asset and extend the trade window.

Dependent on situation for sure. 24 year old D-man with upside and no trade protection? For sure that's an asset of a contract if you think you'd most likely want to trade him still. Players in the 27-30 range who end up getting 5-8 years and won't sign without a small no trade list at minimum generally aren't giving you a leg up in terms of tradability.

The Flames should now have almost zero interest in a player than is UFA in 2 years. Age doesn't even matter at that point.
But in 2 year? Yeah go ahead and get him for free in free agency.

This feels llike it tanks his value further?
If im the flames for example, no way im trading for him now. A 2 year contact that walks him straight to UFA. No thanks.

Flames for sure should stay away now (and before). But this opens him up as an attractive target for teams contending in the next two years. Try to get him in and gelling and hopefully improving on a strong team.
Then you've got a) a D-man with upward mobility improving on your team at a very reasonable cap hit in todays cap world and b) Two full years to negotiate and convince to stay...if you believe in what he is as a player for your team.
And if you don't after a year? Recoup assets in the offseason a year before he's up.

I don't understand this... did Buffalo think he was going to get more than 6.5 via arb? Did Byram's camp not feel he was going to get 6.5?
I dunno... maybe swoop in now and just offer them something middling to see if you can't pry him out? I just don't know what his contract would look like... first/second pairing guy with loads off pp time that pays off, 8 x 8 would be a steal. Middling offence and not great defense, all of a sudden, even 7 x 7 could look bad.
Would he take something like 6 x 7.5? Is he worth that?

But the Sabres didn't want futures. And competing Teams rather deal futures then subtract key pieces from their roster. Plus assets contenders have usually dont measure up.
It reduces the market on Byram and reduces the control offered (reducing his value)

It is my understanding that it is the ideal time to trade a player when they have two years remaining on their contract. 4D chess move by Buffalo.

You're mocking for sure, but there's truth to the fact that a player that can help a contender at a manageable AAV for two years is a valuable asset to contending teams. Buffalo retains 50% on that two year deal and they likely get a hell of a lot more than whatever they were offered by Calgary and St. Louis.
