Then again, maybe this is 4D chess by the Canucks? Take a fragile locker room and toss in a d-bag grenade, trade Hughes for a big haul, and play the odds in the draft lottery.

I do get it from the Canucks' POV if you assume the following are true:
1. Their number 1 objective as an organization is to convince Hughes to re-sign in Vancouver.
2. Assuming there is a chance that Hughes would extend in Vancouver, the Canucks being a strong contender in his eyes is the number one determining factor for him.
3. He needs to believe that the Canucks are going to be a contender for more than 1-3 years. Or perhaps he re-signs for a term that he thinks the Canucks will stay competitive?
If all those things are true, then adding Kane potentially makes the Canucks much better this coming season IF Kane is on his best behaviour and does not rock the room with drama, which being in his contract year is highly likely.
The Canucks will be super interesting this season to follow as they are without a doubt to me putting all their chips in on being a strong team now, all geared towards getting Hughes to extend, but doing so on high risk bets like:
- Demko staying healthy during the season and fresh enough for the playoffs
- Kane not creating divides in the room
- Pettersson bouncing back after more than 82 games of very poor play
