Default Home Insurance Jump

I signed on to TD Meloche Monnex a billion years ago when they were still the APEGGA group insurance provider. The Personal took over that status a few years back, but I have not switched as two different quotes showed barely any difference.

That said, my renewal for 2026 came and the premium moved from $402.23 to $770.17 for a single-family home and an attached townhome rental property this month.

Zero claim history on both properties, and slightly more than the 5.28% average increase the media was warning everyone about earlier this year.

This also included some other lovely details such as accelerated roof depreciation and a doubling of our deductible from $2,500 to $5,000.

Just a peach of a product, and so many competing options. LOVE IT.

I guess I'll go back to The Personal one more time but expect similar results and suspect this is just what it costs to insure property now.

Opening thread as a heads up to others and to provide a place for venting rage.

Mine tripled in two years, I called and updated a bit of info, and it went magically from "Nothing we can do" to almost a third of the new rate, and I increased coverage on a few things. I was ready to switch, but this was easier.

Bonus fun fact.

I got a ~$6,000 cost of living increase on my wage at work this year after receiving no increases for the last two. That was pretty nice to get, and it ALMOST covers the $4,415.28 in premium increase plus $2,500 deductible savings burden now embedded in the arrangement, all with after tax dollars of course.

THANK YOU TD MELOCHE MONNEX!

Yeah I left TD after they increased my deductible from $2500 to $5000 because I had had a claim on a DIFFERENT PROPERTY in a different city entirely.

I left TD a while back when they told me I lived in a higher risk area because we were close to the bow river. I lived in Sundance at the time.

I’d suggest getting multiple Quotes or talking to a broker.

I am also with TD, after getting some quotes and calling to discuss options I ended up with a less than 1% increase this year. Was worth not moving providers.

You should thank the hail storms for the NW, NE, and the deep South the past 3-4 years

I switched from TD to The Personal (Apega deal) earlier this year. The price increase from TD was huge.

Check Bélair Direct. Our premiums skyrocketed and Bélair saved us $700.

I don't see the issue with moving insurance providers but hear people say this all the time.

I auto renewed in December 2024 and never had a significant bump but have heard multiple instances of TD rates being insane. My wife's friend just recently purchased a new house and got a quote from TD for ~10k a year for your basic 1450 sqft house.

That would be very unfortunate to see a large jump like you are experiencing since we have both vehicles and multiple discounts with them.

I value my time more than the savings it was going to provide. Something like $50 over the year.

i've been with Meloche since 1997. They've been some kinda terrible since it became TD Insurance. My home insurance + basic rental condo insurance went from $285/month in January to $495 in June.

I"m leaving!

Look at that, another insurance transgressions thread and surprisingly (not), it's TD the culprit...again!

/s

I vote to have a sticky on the OT section here basically telling people to get off of TD. Seems like 95% of people complaining about insurance rates going up, it's TD.

Meloche Monnex is awful. I'll save my rant for now.

My policy with Aviva went up $1000 this year for our house and I'm currently having a broker shop around. I'll report back if anyone offers me anything sane.

I'm with the Co-operators, they reached out to me for updated information this spring since their new model includes things their old one didn't, then after getting the info decreased my premium by about 20%.

Because it takes multiple hours of time to switch.

They were awful. They completely boned me. I had them out to look at some hail damage, and decided not to make a claim as the payout was going to be meagre, and I already had recent claims.

It turns out because they payed for someone to come look and quote the damage, that was a "claim" anyway. They never warned me about this, and sent me a letter saying they were dropping me as I had 3 claims within 2 years or whatever the threshold was.

THEN when I went to get new insurance, I had to answer "yes" to the have you ever been dropped by an insurer question, and my rates were thus awful for a few years.

The only good thing is I dropped them for auto insurance out of rage at the same time, and found out the "APEGA discount" was several hundred dollars more per year than anyone else I got quotes from. Good riddance.

Meloche Monnex was horrendous.

Meloche Monnex was great until TD took over. Literally everything has become worse: service, on-hold times, costs, coverage details. The Personal is not much better, unfortunately. They want to take over your policy and sound good on the initial call, but it’s all downhill from there in all of the categories. I’ve tried earlier this year and I didn’t switch from TD. Will use a broker and switch by the time my policy term is up in a few months.
