Tesla is making a desperate move to stay alive in Canada as its sales suffer from the fallout of Donald Trump’s trade war. In a quiet but shocking update to its website, the electric vehicle maker has drastically lowered the price of its best-selling Model Y SUV by a staggering $20,000.

This means the Model Y, a popular SUV, is now significantly cheaper than the Model 3, Tesla’s entry-level sedan. A quick check of Tesla’s Canadian website shows the Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive#starting at $70,772, nearly $6,000 more than the larger SUV.

The likely explanation for this dramatic reversal is a major strategic pivot: the new, cheaper Model Ys are reportedly being imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany, allowing the company to bypass the steep tariffs on U.S.-made vehicles.
This is probably also a test to see what the demand is actually like with a good price. If sales only increase 10%, they are still sunk. Maybe they should just leave Canada. Too big, not worth it.

I saw two new model Y's this weekend. I don't know why anyone would do that. If you see the new light bar across the front and back, that's the sign they knowingly bought a Swasticar. Now they get the added benefit of seeing they overpaid by $20k, and their resale value just went poof. Tesla really does know how to treat their loyal quislings...

The agency criticized Tesla for marketing its Level 2 driver-assistance features as Full Self-Driving, which could mislead consumers. The FSD system is reportedly not even activated in France. The DGCCRF noted, “The marketing language overstates the actual functionality and clearly constitutes false advertising.”
Tesla’s sales practices were also scrutinized, with investigators pointing out multiple consumer rights violations, including:
  • Failure to specify delivery destinations
  • Requesting payment before cancellation rights are exercised
  • Not providing receipts for cash transactions

Tesla has not released an official response to the French government’s order. Should the company fail to comply, it could face fines of up to 50,000 EUR per day, drawing sharp attention to how the automaker will respond.
