Not the result he wanted today but I think Shelton has done pretty well for a guy that started tennis later than most pros. I feel there's another level to his game that can be unlocked if he can improve his return of serve and court coverage.

service return reaction time does not get better with age, but return tactics do. He could back up to give himself more time, look for ways to read direction or just study up beforehand to try and guess percentages.
He does have to learn how to grind better. That is the one thing Fritz does better than all the other top Americans.

Speaking of grinding. Djokovic doing just that to Cobolli.

Wow, a great win by Amanda Anisimova just now taking out Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. Both ladies showed some nerves today, but Amanda prevailed in the end.

A roller-coaster of a 4th set tie-break. Charlie gets up 4-1, Fritz wins 5 consecutive points and looking to force a 5th set, then Charlie wins the next four points to win the match.

If we give Charlie two per year over the next 10 years, that's likely when Spain usurps the US. 2035 then?

he'll also need 2 or 3 godlike years where he wins three of them in order to catch or surpass Djoker. Can he do it the way he does now, where adversity is required to unlock his high gears? Or will he eventually find a way to sleepwalk to a bunch of majors the way the B3 often did?

Meanwhile, Sinner looks like the puppet master thus far today and Novak is dangling on the strings.

If Alcaraz had Sinner's focus we'd probably looking a couple undefeated seasons in the future. We've seen it all tournament (and other tournaments) where Alcaraz just totally ####s off for stretches, probably because he's so bored of being way better than the guys he's playing. But the sport is finished if he gets that Sinner-level of robotic-ness. Bigger question right now is who is out there to stop the next 10 GS finals being Alcaraz-Sinner?

Geez, this is an incredible level from Sinner and Novak is getting a visit from the trainers.
