Man...going to these off-ship conferences is a serious gamble. Its like the Romulans have a ship just tagging along by the Enterprise...
"Oh! They're going to a Conference! Lets nab 'em!!"

That would just be such a great skit or something...like Geordi's replacement looks nothing like him, but it would have been hilarious if it was like Snoop-Dogg in full leisure suit, joint hanging out of his mouth, dreadlocks and jewelry but just with a Visor going to the Conference.
"What up? I'm Geordi!!"

I finished my rewatch of Strange New Worlds, and I'm pretty much going to pronounce it as the second best Star Trek series, because frankly nothing will supplant the original series.
From the way the ensemble crew works to every main character getting their own main characters, to the fact that there are some episodes that are so ludicris and still manage to work is amazing. Everything about this feels like a labour of love. the Orville worked because Seth Macfarlane loves Start Trek and it shows. In SNW, it feels the same way and avoids all of the things that made Discovery so easy to hate.
In my favorite episodes in 2 minute bites.
The Elysian Kingdom
This story has been told in Trek so many times that it could have been a mail in episode. the Crew loses their memories and become characters in a different story. But the actors did such a good job. Anson Mount absolutely played up being the slimy cowardly power behind the throne. Christine Chong was brilliant playing a completely different character in a spoiled Princes. But most of the praise goes to Babs Olusanmokum as this was his episode and he was brilliant and we finally got a satisfying conclusion to his daughters story.
All those who Wander
A actually terrifying horror story of an episode, and this episode belongs to Singh. The Gorn are completely redesigned from the original series and enterpise. they borrow heavily from Aliens, they're fast, brutal spit venom and lay eggs in your chest. But this episode stands out for the absolute heartbreaking death of Hemmer.
A quality of Mercy
There are two absolute themes in this episode and they mix together in a powerful way. Pike learns that if he tries to avoid his fate, he pretty much dooms everyone. We also see a retelling of one of my favorite episodes of TOS Balance of Terror which was loosely based on the excellent movie "Run Silent Run Deep". We see the Battle of the Enterprise and the Romulan ship with its super villain from the perspective of Pike in command. In the original series, this was a flat out one on one brawl between Kirk and the Romulan commander. In this episode Pike takes a different tack and tries diplomacy and utterly fails dooming the Federation to a war with the Romulans. I wasn't sold on the casting of Kirk, but Paul Wesley really does kind of grown on you. We also see Number 1's arrest for lying to Star Fleet setting up a cliff hanger for season 2.
To be continued.

Ad Astra Per Aspera
I have to admit that I'm a sucker for legal dramas. One of my favorite old movies is still the Canine Mutiny where the best part of it was not on board the Caine but in the court room. This was a really well written court room drama where we didn't have the crew running around finding miracle evidence to free the defendant, but instead the crew were relegated to spectators and Pike relegated to wondering if his career was about to end. Neera Ketoul was a force in this episode as she manipulated all of the testimony and cornered to court to make the right decision in the end and to free number 1. But this is one of the most power pieces of social commentary based about racism based on fear. The people of earth had gone through a terrifying period of rule by the augmented supermen like Khan and established racist draconian laws to prevent it. This episode was about the difficulties in tearing it down. Spock also continued to brilliantly play the straight man in this series as his Gilbert and Sullivan testimony was so dead pan and brilliant.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow
I guess its easy to guess that La'an has become one of my favorite characters of the ensemble cast as they've given her a real depth, and intriguing lineage and back story, and I think Christina Chong is brilliant in this role. This is a paint by numbers time travel story, that they could have really played with if they had made it a two parter. But the Character interaction between Singh and Kirk is actually so satisfying and you see how lonely Singh's life has become because of her guarded nation. We also got the fascinating question. Could you kill Hitler as a young boy, if you thought it would save millions but you knew the effects could be as bad or worse. Could you look a child in the eye and kill him for what you believe is the greater good. Singh had the opportunity to kill Khann as a youngster, but not only was the cost to high, but it would be wrong no matter the results.
Charades
This was such an important episode wrapped in absolutely brilliant and ludicris writing beats. As Spock's Vulcan DNA is ripped from him. We get brilliant struggles by Spock to control his emotion, but none better then when he completely loses it on Sam Kirk for not cleaning up his plates and has to be held back from killing him. I'm sure we can all related. Sadly this brings an end to the Spock T'Pring story line, which was really brilliant. And we get the someone ham fisted Chapel Spock romance, which I think is a weak part of the show.
To be continued
