Maybe. But with Lafreniere, a big advantage he had was that he was built like a 24 year old already in junior. He was stronger that his peers while also being very skilled. That’s not necessarily a knock on Lafreniere but, similar to cases where big players dominate junior leagues, his strength might have given him another advantage in junior that he would not have in the NHL. McKenna’s superiority over his peers on the ice is purely based on skill. He’s put up generational numbers with a slight frame that he can build on. Essentially, there is room for him to get bigger, stronger and faster as an NHLer.

Pronman is weirdly low on McKenna. Doesn't consider him to be a Celebrini/Bedard level prospect.

Weird.
Pronman's Way Too Early 2025 draft article from last year had Schaefer at 7, Misa (as a leftwinger) at 8 and had Desnoyer and O'Brien at 15 and 16 (behind Reschny at 14). He also didn't have Martin, Kindell, Nesbitt or Cootes as first rounders.

I like an early list like this, but as the title says, it's way too early--although super unlikely McKenna gets displaced.

We'll still see a lot of movement, some position changes, and likely a few more likely bigger centres climb up (and maybe a Ryabkin type faller).

Yeah as of right now the list looks very light on centers...but its' quite possible that some of these guys shift to center in their Draft year.

Mckenna isnt a big player but 6' 165lbs at 17 isnt tiny. Going to college hell have time to bulk up. If he goes into the draft at 6' or 6'1 180 with more room to grow he wont be small at all.

Remember when a knock on Demidov was that he was on the smaller side. Now hes 6'1 190.

What a miss indeed. The TV experience for the most recent draft was absolutely atrocious.

Maybe Benny the Bear will have a chance to announce the Flames selections after all!

Sucks for the fans watching at home.

Sucks for the kids getting drafted, being robbed of the full experience.

Good for GM's as they get to chit-chat in private.. and that's the part that matters most?

Swing and a miss. Hearing about GM's talking on the draft floor was half the excitement of the event.

Can't remember if it was Scott Wheeler or Bader on FlamesTalk a few weeks ago but he said that something like 90% of GM's in the league, as well as Gary himself, all wanted the draft to go back to the way it was. So what the heck.

I'm guessing owners want to save $ on sending all of their staff to the draft.

Much preferred the previous draft setup. But if they are going to keep it de-centralized, I really hope they remove the cringey aspects of this year’s draft. Get rid of the video call with the team immediately after being drafted. No more celebrity draft announcers. No big button to press for trades. If they want it de-centralized then keep it simple - Bettman announces the pick, the player comes up and puts the jersey on and takes a picture. Then they walk off and can do interviews with broadcasters. Some might say this takes the entertainment out of it but, if they’re going with de-centralized, then this is all I care to see. Everything else the NHL tried to do to make it entertaining just came off as awkward and it really slowed down the draft to a crawl.

Yup. Dull and quick is a lot better than dull and slow.

I agree, though part of the problem is Bettman is really cringey bad too.

Bettman was there all along. The old format managed to be good in spite of him, so his performance was not the reason it was bad this year.

Is it any wonder trades don't get done? The GMs talk a big game but then shrink when its go time.

Want a de-centralized draft, so they get it. They whine about it to the point Bettman is asked about it constantly and reiterates it was their call.

They have the draft, now want to keep it.

Next year they'll complain about it again I'm sure. Cannot commit or make up their minds.
