I like Stampede but I don't dress up in cowboy cosplay, mostly because cowboys were the ones who called me ###### in school.
Yeehaw?

I have a few farmers in the family and when I go help in the spring and again in the fall, i dont, and none of them, dress like cowboys. Its tshirts, jeans (shorts when its hot-almost always for me), ball cap and steel toe work boots.
Theres ranchers and rodeo folks seem to wear it as a costume.
And honestly, dressing up like a 'cowboy' the way people do looks ridiculous to me. Downtown office workers wearing it is just weird.

One of my summer staff, a uni-student needed an "emergency trip" to BC for his girlfriends friends funeral.
I am a pushover, and shifted the schedule for him. Better to screw the schedule then to have a mopping angry kid in the office getting paid to slack ( I am the only person affected).
Anyhow, turns out that his 5 day trip will change into a 9 day trip because his car was impounded.
My question is this, how does a person get their car impounded that long? is this a drinking and driving thing, or could it be getting too many demerits or something like that.

Perhaps excessive speeding? I think they can seize your vehicle in BC for a few days for that.
Quote:
Police can impound your vehicle for excessive speeding. They will impound it for:
- Seven days for a first offence
- 30 days for a second offence within two years
- 60 days for any later offence within two years
You must pay all towing and storage costs.

If he was busted on day one on the drive there, the timeline fits.

My next question is, is this enough due cause to fire them?

He's worked for such a little time that you can just lay him off and give like one day's worth extra of pay and that would be more than sufficient.

This is how it is in rural BC, unfortunately. A cop will have you out of the vehicle for going 30km/hr or more over the posted limit (say, 120 on a 90 stretch of Hwy-1). Then, they issue a ticket and have your vehicle impounded by a private contractor. Often, these contractors have their “lot” in the woods somewhere. Then there’s some kind of mandatory hold period until you can get your car out. Then, come weekends and statutory holidays, where a contractor doesn’t have to be there to release your vehicle. Long story short, if your guy was stopped, say, on Friday, June 27, chances are he wouldn’t be able to get his car out until July 2 at the earliest. Plus, I’ve heard that some rules got even tougher and more complicated lately.

Probably. Depends how your contract is written.
Can always give him 2 weeks notice and terminate. It might become sketchy if it is termination "with cause".

You just stand your ground and say 'NO!' Because thats what that kid wanted you to do!
"Sorry babe, my Boss says I cant have the time off, so I cant go to your friends' funeral...aw shucks darn!"
And then he gets a week with no GF, doesnt have to head to BC and basically eats delivery pizza and plays Playstation until 3am for week.
You broke that boy's heart sir. Torn it asunder! And now you want to fire him for your mistake? For shame sir...for shame.

K? 30km/h over is no longer a whoopsie. How's that unfortunate?

Well, it depends. When you’ve been stuck behind an RV for an hour between Revelstoke and Sicamous and trying to get ahead on a short passing lane, it’s easy to get to 120 for a brief moment. Coincidentally, this is exactly where cops set their speed traps. I don’t think this is right.

I feel stupid for giving him the extra two days off sure certain. But the stupid idiot has two kids, so he wouldn't be getting away from it all, he would be baby sitting aka calling in sick to work.
The lesson is don't hire losers.

It's seasonal employment. You do not have to give notice.

If that's not good enough for you, he's still well within the 90 day probation period, which also allows you to terminate without notice.

What kind of car does this "struggling university student" drive? If it is like a beat-up POS, how can that thing go 30/40 clicks over speed limit?

bro come on.
Alberta highways are littered with beaten up old Pontiac Sunfires that usually speed, especially in poor winter conditions on bald tires.

Anything can go 30k over the limit if the hill is steep enough.

I was thinking a family of 6 cramped in an old Corolla struggling to get to 80km/h on Stoney...
