Much like his son, he had a high approval rating with younger, progressive voters early on in his career. Towards the end of his term, it dropped. That’s obviously not uncommon. But his legacy isn’t highly renowned; more so polarizing. And it wasn’t just small pockets of Alberta and Saskatchewan, it was the large majority. Again, not uncommon for farmers and ranchers to be anti progress. Not to mention the alienation of western Canada, as a whole.
I believe he rose to prominence by sheer luck and his ability to look good on camera. It was the tail end of the 60s and the middle of the civil rights movement and those god damn hippies!!

I agree it was sort of taken out of context but the reason it stung and got the play it did was the quote coupled with the Canadian Wheat Board. Farmers had very little freedom to market their wheat and by law could only sell their cereals through the Board. With low prices and high interest rates this quote seemed incredibly out of touch and insulting. “Why should I sell your wheat??” To which farmers replied, “Because it’s illegal for us to sell it anywhere else.”

Wow, finally! One of these morons finally does the right thing. Take note, idiots. Follow your leader. Ignore all the negative stuff, it's all about being pronoun free.

It'd be a darn shame if a dozen burly men with covered faces raided the trailer and gave him a one-way ticket to the South Sudan.
A darn shame.

From the article
As a Hail Mary gamble, the convoy leader has decided to take the unusual step of filing for political asylum in the United States to avoid standing trial in Ottawa.
“My only option on the chessboard was to claim political asylum,” Bauder explained. “We’ve flipped the game of chess back in my court. Now I have the Crown in check.”

"My only option is to run away like a coward instead of taking my punishment like a man." Maybe it's Janine Bauder, am I right, James? This sure isn't very alpha male of you, Mr trucker farmboy kinda guy.

Weird chess puns aside, how is the Crown in check? This is a win for the Crown. Possibly better than spending the money on a trial.

Then sets up an agency to help others do the same. It'd be like a reverse brain drain for Canada.

We'll take their doctors, scientists, and academics because intellectualism is sooooo woke, and we'll send them... freedom or something. Win win.

Your huddled masses yearning to inject bleach,
The wretched refuse of your trailer homed.
Send these, the morons, woke-tost to me,
I lift my red hat beside the gates of hell!"
