I mean I get why the players don’t like fitness testing but that seems like a strange one. I thought teams would be pretty set on wanting to benchmark their players fitness, maybe not so much about versus each other, but versus themselves. For example prospect A, did you get stronger versus last year? Better endurance? Etc

Seems pretty important IMO

I wonder if there will be fewer injuries. At this point wear and tear is a bigger season ender than coming in out of shape.

That's quite a significant assumption.

Hockey players are on a full time training and diet regiment by the time that they turn 14. The off season is a 7-14 day holiday before intensive training. The odd 30 year old vet under contract comes in a little out of shape by NHL standards.

The players are on skates all year.

This isn't 1990 anymore.

One thing I noticed that I haven't seen being reported is that they are increasing the number of regular recalls after the trade deadline from 4 to 5.

I guess that is a start. I don't understand that there is even a limit. In a cap world teams should be free to move players up and down after the trade deadline. 5 is better than 4, but it should still be higher so teams don't need to put themselves into a situation where it counts as an emergency call up rather than a recall.

The reason that there is a limit is so that teams out of the playoff race just bench veteran players for kids for the rest of the season.

Why is that bad or not allowed though? What’s the issue with that?

Fans pay to see good players not a bunch of no names because a team is tanking

NHLPA has long held onto this rule. Players want to play. Typically its for their next contract. Harder to get another one if you are scratched for a good chunk of the season.

Interesting change I haven't seen reported elsewhere: The Salary Cap shall never be less than $104 million, and there's a new formula for calculating the Salary Floor. The floor will now be set to $30 million below the cap.

Ooh...thats interesting. I wonder if there are contingencies for that when COVID-II rolls around?

This is better, but I wish they would have just changed it to match the rules for the playoffs, where you can have an unlimited number of recalls after the deadline, but can only have 4 recalled players on your roster at any given time (or even limit it to 2 or 3 in the regular season).

Starting in 2028-29. They're keeping the lag formula, but altering it a little bit.

Another wrinkle related to LTIR:

Quote:
Revise CBA Section 50.10(d)(iii) as follows:

The total replacement Player Salary and Bonuses for a Player or Players that have replaced an unfit-to-play Player may not in the aggregate exceed the amount of the Player Salary and Bonuses of the unfit-to-play Player who the Club is replacing. In addition, the Average Amount(s) of such replacement Player(s) may not exceed the Prior Season's Average League Salary, except as follows:

(A) With the approval of the NHL and the NHLPA (which shall be based upon an evaluation of the time likely to be missed as a result of the relevant injury), the above noted Averaged Amount(s) may exceed the Prior Season's Average League Salary.

(B) In such situations and upon such approval, the applicable unfit-to-play Player shall be ineligible to play for the remainder of that season (including the Playoffs).
If I'm reading that correctly, teams won't be able to acquire high-priced players as "replacement" players for an injured player unless they make the injured player ineligible for the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

So, if the average league salary is $3 million and you have a player with an $8 million salary who gets injured, you won't be able to acquire a player with a $6 million salary to replace him and then activate both of them for the playoffs.
