I love swimming as a sport for her. While there's obviously competition between swimmers, it's mostly a sport where you compete with yourself to improve.

One of my favourite things is when you have a kid obviously swimming their first longer distance (200m+) and everyone watching cheers them on to finish.

The chase to drop tenths of a second is so real.. my daughter is currently working on trying to qualify for provincials in either 50 or 100m free. Needs to drop about 1.7s and 3.2s respectively.

Swim meets suck so much though. It's so long, and so much noise. Our club doesn't require fundraising, just volunteering. We're hosting the Canadian Swim Trials next weekend and I'm looking forward to watching Summer McIntosh in person. She's swimming with our club's national team and those kids are SO excited.
Which club? Are you in BC? My daughter (12) is about 1/3 of a second from qualifying Mansask. She swims with the Elk Valley team, I may in fact run into you if our kids make it into the same meets.

Long course season has started, I’m thinking she qualifies in one of those meets pretty quick here.

Well we were in Blackfalds this weekend for the U13A Softball (fastpitch) provincials. Our daughter's team went in seeded 6th and came out in the same spot. She's one of the lower players on the roster so didn't get to play much. She did pitch their game against the team that eventually won, and they're on a whole other level from everyone else in the province. She got player of the game for her team, so that was a pretty cool moment for her (and us). Thanks for indulging my parent-brag!

I haven't spent a lot of time logged in here, so I missed this. She swims with Pacific Coast Swimming. She just missed out on provincials, she's 0.43s off on 50m free, but did take the regional championship for Vancouver Island in her age group.

Edit: she has a lot more work to do for next season since she will turn 13 before the next provincials. She already has a couple of divisional times for 13-14, and a far western, but provincials are pretty tough for 13-14.

Her 50 free time is 30.71 (LC) and 100 free is 1:08.80 (SC), while the provincial standard is 28.50(SC)/29.07(LC) and 1:03.30(SC)/1:04.57(LC)

What club are you coaching with?

I still stand by my statement on the safety of rugby
Coaching w/ the Saints and playing 3rds between them and the Ram's (Holy Goats for the mixed team albeit Saint's have done no favors to the Ram's this year)

Guessing i have played with Boblobla on a number of occasions

The culture around rugby is top notch. That being said the injury rate can get pretty high. I'm lucky to not have anything serious for injuries for how long i have played.

I missed the beat down my club laid on you guys.

I played for a lot of years, 16 to 48.

I have some underlying problems, but by and large would do it all over again.

Now I live through my son

Not quite. She won't do 3d shoots because the targets are fake animals.

Man, those qualifying times are FAST. I think ManSask is around 35 for 10-12 year olds.

We are heading out to Winnipeg this weekend with 15 swimmers that qualified. Super excited for the swimming. Not so much for Winnipeg lol

It's going to be interesting. She hasn't trained much with all the unrelated (ski and canoe) fitness camps going on so it could go either way here.

Yeah, I was talking to one of her coaches yesterday and his comment was: yeah, you spend a year getting your butt kicked then a year kicking butt.

My daughter is ridiculously strong, so there's a chance she can make provincials before she turns 13 in 50 free if she continues to build strength. Her form for freestyle is excellent, and she's spending more time doing distance and developing her cardio. She's a sprinter though through and through.
