For those that want a chance to see an Antonov 124 it looks like we may have one coming here from Turkey on Sunday. Being chartered by a BW Gold Inc. No arrival time yet.

I saw two fighters fly overhead at about 1:45pm, NW Confederation Park area. Can't recall ever seeing that. Was it Stampede Parade related?

Two CF-18s did a fly-over. Probably for the rodeo.

This is most likely the A124 on the way to us today, just approaching Iceland right now:

Edit: She's landed in Iceland for now.

I unfortunately am getting to see BC wildfire service aircraft up close.

Spoiler!

Obviously since I’m posting on CP we haven’t been evacuated yet. Power is out but I think that was intentional and preventative. Kelowna airport is closed.

Not my video.

Those pilots are nuts. Thank goodness for them.

It’s pretty crazy watching them dive right into the smoke. And there’s a smaller plane leading the bigger plane that appears to be a spotter.

That's the Bird dog. AI overview from google;

A "birddog" fire refers to an aircraft, specifically a "birddog" plane, that leads and coordinates aerial firefighting operations during a wildfire. An Air Attack Officer (AAO) in the birddog assesses the fire, guides airtankers to the safest and most effective drop locations, and manages all aerial and ground communications. Essentially, the birddog acts as the "eyes in the sky" for the entire aerial firefighting effort.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Purpose:
Birddog aircraft are used to guide airtankers to drop ######ant or water effectively and safely on wildfires.
Role of Air Attack Officer:
The Air Attack Officer (AAO) in the birddog is a highly trained specialist who:
Assesses the fire and identifies the most critical areas for attack.
Directs the flight paths and drop locations for airtankers.
Communicates with ground crews, other aircraft, and regional offices.
How it works:
The birddog flies ahead of the airtankers, scouting the fire and ensuring safe routes and drop zones. It may also test drop routes before the larger tankers arrive.
Not a fire extinguisher:
While birddogs play a crucial role in guiding airtankers, they don't directly extinguish the fire. Aerial firefighting is most effective when combined with ground-based efforts.
Birddog aircraft:
Various types of aircraft can be used as birddogs, including the Daher TBM 960 and Cessna 208.

Is it just stopping for a refuel, or will it be here overnight/a day? Where is the best place to watch it come in? The usual spot is all ripped up, so...off of 36th somewhere?

I was told it doesn't leave until Wednesday, and it's down at apron 9 so you'd be able to see it from Aero Dr pretty good

I ended up driving around a bit and found my way to a spot just north of the tunnel, where the planes all line up to take off, since it was coming in from the north and everything else was taking off south. I was directly west of the big white soccer ball weather station thing, or whatever that is, on the west side of the airport. Just off Barlow, 25 St, I think? Walked up on the berm and watched.

Ironically, it probably flew directly over my house. With the work being done on the south end of the runways, we've seen an increase in flights coming on, and I swear, they use our street to line up to the runway. We joke that the wheels skim our rooftop.

I've got my grandson overnight - maybe I'll drive over there when I take him home, so he can see. Thanks!
