It wasn’t a very intriguing UFA pool. All to old for what we probably need.
UFA mania will make more sense for the Flames in a year or two.

GMs are getting a huge increase in cap space, and already the majority are blowing it all on mid-depth players. I think this bodes well for Calgary in the long run.

Really good point. I hadn’t thought of that.
You’re right, you’d think the Stars wouldn’t worry about missing the playoffs next season. But you never know - NHL GMs are pretty conservative. Even though it’s low odds, if DAL did miss the playoffs and then the traded pick won the lottery, it would probably define Nill’s legacy.

No.
He’s earned the right to be UFA.
Flames have to manage the asset and this fanbase has PTSD.

No most teams blitz for a month leading into the draft and Free Agency and then take a week or two to get family time in. The phones always on tho if your the GM.
It’s a reason a lot of big deals happen end of July/Early August.

Sounds to me like they are really going to carry this situation all the way to the trade deadline. I really wish they wouldn't, but we've seen in the NHL how slow and difficult it is to get business done. Just refer to Trouba (from WPG and again from NYR) Bennett, Hamonic. Teams will keep a guy well past the point of a messy public breakup

Thanks for the update Sec! Aside from news about an imminent trade pending, this is probably the second best piece of news we could hear. Time to log off for a bit and enjoy the weather!

Lol I look forward to the complete meltdowns by certain posters if the Flames wait till August or later to move Ras.
Some people acting like Conroy pulled a Feaster and traded the equivalent of Iginla for 2 bums and a first in the Hanifin deal. The return, while not incredible, is not even close to being on the list of worst bungled assets by the Flames. It could actually be a very good return if Vegas somehow implodes (unlikely). What we already have is evidence of Conroy being able to extract decent to excellent value in multiple trades. Some posters gotta ####ing chill, it’s a long offseason. Pace yourselves.

To add to this, Conroy's organizational direction is solid in my opinion. I would be okay with a few years of bottom 5 finishes. However, I accept that is not the organization's view. Nevertheless, they are focused on drafting and developing well with the picks available and gathering more picks; not letting valuable free agents walk for nothing; having a professional environment for young players to grow in; and, identifying players and market inefficiencies to help round out the roster.
One failed transaction here or there does not determine his tenure as GM. I already have more faith that this build will result better than the last one.

A deal with George as one of the main pieces is pretty meh.
I think he projects to being a back-up or tandem goalie at best.
Big whoop.

McKenna 2026
DuPont 2027
Schultz 2028
Any one of those could be franchise altering. 2027 and 2028 picks are gonna get really pricey as we get closer
The fact they’re all western Canadian kids is also very promising from a marketing perspective for the flames

Yup. Always easier to get those picks a couple yrs down the road from strong teams now.

I agree. That's why I'm in favor of acquiring picks in out years instead of focusing just on the current or next draft.
But we also need to acknowledge that you need a lot of luck to be in position to get one of those players. So the plans needs to be durable such that it doesn't hinge alone on getting a #1 pick. Because the chances of that happening are small.

100%. Go for 2026 that slide to 2027 unprotected or 2027 that slide to 2028. Definitely takes some luck but even if those picks don’t slide, they’re still good assets
