Having a Kevin Bahl or an Adam Klapka is nice to bring a little intimidation, but teeny tiny Ryan Lomberg coming at me would scare me just as much as those two, and he seemed mighty effective on the fire check last season to boot.

Yeah it comes down to play style more then anything. Bennett for example isn't small but he's also far from being the biggest guy.
Rossi is stocky and doesn't shy away.
Just as an example, go to moneypuck and look at scoring heat maps for Rossi. You can compare it to a guy like Cozens.
Almost all of Rossi's goals are inside the slot. Cozens has some, but has a bunch outside.
He's not perfect, but you can't let perfect be the enemy of good. He's the available option and has high upside.
I would love an entire team of 6'4 240lb mutants that skate fast with high skill. It's not realistic.

Tkachuk has had three major injuries three of the last four years and still was close to a PPG.

I think if they could afford to they would, but they've got a superstar in Kaprizov who's about to make 14M+ a season.
I wouldn't call 6'1 "big" myself, when people say "HUGE" centers I'm assuming they mean 6'4 at a minimum.
The last time we saw one available was Cozen's and I'd argue he's definitely bigger but I wouldn't say he's a more skilled player than Rossi. Rossi is quite young too, I think there's a lot more to give on a team who can give him more minutes and responsibilities.
Now with all of this said, like Jiri pointed out you have to consider the acquisition cost as well. I certainly wouldn't trade the farm for him, but simply put he makes the Flames significantly better today if they acquired him for minimal cost.
The Flames need more 60+ pt guys, a lot more.
|
I'm 6'3" 270lbs if we need more size at center lol. I'll play for league minimum, who am I kidding I would play for a jersey with my name on it. I do have a long concussion history though, so not sure I would pass the medical.

It doesnt work that way. You wont be drafting top 5 when you try to be a 15th place team that Edwards wants yearly,
Wish we could fire him.

Nobody is saying that small players CAN'T play in the NHL, but lack of size will always be considered a "detriment" in contact sports. Like I have said many times, if you are small and make it to the NHL, you have made it DESPITE your lack of size. You can't have too many small players, and if you do, better surround them with some beef. You don't necessarily need "huge" players in abundance, just try to not have too many "small" players.
Jiri is right, Rossi would be a second-line C here, and I'm all for acquiring him- it's not like there's any centers on the market who are better- but should we be actively pursuing him to solve our depth down the middle? Only if there's nothing else available. Like I said, there's a reason why Rossi has been singled out to be traded, when they have other players who put up less points that could be moved instead.

Murray was terrible at executing that plan over the last 12 months, not spending anywhere near the cap and trading Mangiapane and Markstrom in the offseason for Bahl and futures. Brutal execution at trying to be a bubble team, so much more could have been done to try to get to that goal. Leaving at least 10 million in cap space this year is another abject fail by Murray.

Yes, I believe that you have a few small players, but they have to be surrounded by size. Even without small players, there's the Gaudreau types, who are actually small, and the Marchand types, who somehow still play with physicality.
I think size matters more on the back end. When Tampa won their recent cups, they had tons of skill in their forwards, but tons of size on the back end.

Or Edward was aware this wont team won compete so he could profit the savings just like he took the tax payers to town on his free building.
Stop trying to get around the worst ownership in hockey. I know you love your just barely made it finishes but we competed right!!!

I agree and size isn't just height. Marco Rossi is jacked.

Why is it such a challenge for you to just disagree like an adult instead of always resorting to these passive agressive strawman fallacies?

I'm sure he wants to win. But I don't think he has the patience for it.
I would assume he would rather steady playoff revenue from 2 or 3 home playoff games a year, than to take a risk of missing for 5 or more years to properly rebuild the team to contend. I don't think he wants to see multiple years of no playoffs, even if it helps make us better.

Someone trying to defend Edwards here is hilarious. Most people know how crappy of an owner he is with his oil companies and Flames.

Daily face off has the Flames lines as
Huberdeau-Kadri-Zary
Coleman-Backlund-Coronato
Farabee-Frost-Sharongovich
Lomberg-Pospisil-Klapka
Bahl-Andersson
Hanley-Weegar
Bean-Pachal
Wolf
Cooley
Forward is okay. Kerins and Kirkland provide some depth and there arent any kids clearly ready for an NHL spot. There isnt room to add though.
Goal is fine. Wolf is the starter, and they have healthy competition for the back up. A veteran backup wouldn't hurt though.
But we have too many D. Miromanov, Solovyov, and Kuznetsov are NHL ready. Poirier and Brzustewicz need some NHL time. Parekh could make the team. There are a couple of other names to watch for as well.
I don't see a lot of space to add players without moving some out. I would love to see them clear a spot at D.

I know Utah would like to get Rossi. Their coach has said great things about him. Who cares if Rossi is shorter get a big guy to help balance that out.

4 playoff appearances in the last 10 seasons.
Great strategy.

I don't think Conroy is looking to add using picks or prospects.
Lots of names on that list don't NEED to make the team either or stay with the team.
