Even looking at how the picks went between 18 and 32, there isn't anyone I would've hands down liked better than Potter. Very happy with the way it went!

(McKenzie had Potter at 21 and Reschny at 19.)

I was pretty surprised to see how many first rounders didn't have either name tags or if they did they were velcro'd.
Bad look.
Bring ten jerseys to the damn draft and look like you were hoping to draft the 18 year old you got.
Glad Calgary had some class on this.

Vancouver taking Cootes was one relief and most thought the Islanders wanted a center with one of their picks, had they taken Reschny the Flames may have reached for Potter at #18

Conroy did say after that they were looking to trade up to get Potter did he not? But was thankful he was there at 32

I think any of us Flames fans would trade 22 in for 32 this year.

To me there were a few things that broke their way:
Kindel to Pitt at 11
Nesbitt to Philly at 12.
Those were the big 2 that allowed Reschney to be there for the Flames.

I think a great comp for Reschny is Sam Reinhart.
- both have one of the highest IQs in their respective drafts
- both make plays at full speed with ease
- both were outstanding producers in the playoffs (Reschny a bit more!)
- both are just average skaters in terms of speed, including their first two steps (agility)
- both are great on their edges and are elusive, even if they aren't burners
Key differences to me is that Reinhart was "2 inches taller, and the better goal scorer. Reschny's shot is good, but it isn't great. Lucky for him, shots are relatively easy to work on if you have the patience and the right skills coach - just ask Muffin-Man turned sniper Elias Lindholm. Another key difference? Reinhart was a bit old in his draft, and Reschny was young. If Reschny was 2" taller, he would have gone in the top 10 easily, so the comp isn't far off IMO.
If Reschny can improve his skating, he will end up as a center. If he can't become a more explosive skater, then he will transition to the wing, but I think he ends up as an effective NHL'er still, just like Reinhart (though I am not saying he reaches Reinhart's level, just pointing out Reinhart is an effective winger).
Either way, Flames drafted a difference maker for the top 6. 2-3 years down the road. I don't think he needs more than 2 years of college, right?

Maybe I've missed something, but you must be the first person I've seen questioning his ability to play center at the NHL level. I've read and heard multiple reports that he is a lock to play C at the next level, with zero red flags towards any of his key physical attributes.
Maybe he can be more explosive and hone his shot further but it certainly doesn't mean they are poor.

Center? Check
Decent size and speed? Check
Play driver? Check
What more do you want from this guy? I’m telling you right now, if he was 6’2/3 then he’d be drafted in the top 10. People should be happy he went to 18. I was afraid the Isles would’ve picked him at 16/17 with their back- to-back picks.

Average NHL size: 6'1" and 200lbs.
Reschny: 5'11' and 186lbs.
He's hardly small or undersized. He will obviously bulk up further to ~200lbs as he goes through a full college season, and then what is there for people to talk about? 1.5-2" of height which adds up to what exactly in the grand scheme of things?
He's a really nice pick at a position of dire need and one that I feel could be viewed similar to the Coronato pick that flew under the radar somewhat in 3-4 years.

Yes, he said that, and based on his reaction when asked about Potter in the press conference after round 1, you can tell it wasn't just the usual "we tried to move up to get him and were lucky he was still there when we picked" thing that every GM says after the draft. He sounds genuinely happy/surprised they got him.

bit of a bummer on Battaglia, realize he was always in tough but he covered the spread as a 2nd rounder who showed well...to at least get the chance to rub shoulders at camp

Let’s hope HC received the much needed enema behind the selection team.

I had friends who were 5'10 when we graduated grow to 6' at 19-20. They were late bloomers though.
Definitely possible.
