All this talk about being propped up by Dahlin. It's not like we don't have a kickass Dman in Weegar he can be put on a pairing with? Not to mention our staff is excellent with defenders.
I'd have a lot of confidence he'd be fine here.

Hamonic was a limited offensive defenseman that wanted to be closer to mom, had limited destination targets, and was on a great contract. He was a 3/4 at the time, and was 27.
Byram is an offensive defenseman that wants out of an organization that many want out of, needs a new contract, has top pairing upside, and is 24.
I don't see much similar other than the position they play.

I think the similarities are about the team overpaying for a young defenseman that was never as good as their reputation suggested, and when it wasn't really a pressing need.

The way I compare it
Hamilton > Byram > hamonic at time of trade.
Byram in between Hamilton and Hamonic as an overall asset.
Hes older then Dougie was with an injury history and hasn't hit the numbers Dougie did at a younger age. Hes younger then hamonic with more upside but will be on a worse contract.
I definitely don't want to pay the price we paid for either of these guys.

Hamonic was a luxury that the Flames didn't need. It was Treliving pushing his chips in on us being a contender.
Flames absolutely need LHD right now. Especially ones with skill.
Bahl
Hanley
Bean
Kuznetsov
Solovyov
Thats a problem.

Even the young doesn't line up though with over three years between them at acquisition time.
But if it's a trade that you wish they didn't make sure.
Gary Leeman = Travis Hamonic

I dont think we need anything right now since we're not trying to seriously compete.
Patience is a big advantage we have right now.

He fits exactly what the GM keeps telling people the Flames are after.
They want to be competitive and get younger. Conroy's words, not mine.
He's 24. He's a LHD. He'd slot in on the first pair. Checks the boxes.

I think Hanifin at the age of 22 is a better comparable than either Hamilton, or Hamonic. Hanifin at 22 was a lot more sheltered than Byram at 24. The positive I take away from this comparison is that Hanifin's defensive game improved a lot with the Flames.

I see both sides of the coin here. From the perspective of those wanting to stay away from Byram I get it:
Concussion issues in the past
Underwhelming analytics in Buffalo
Potential cost to acquire (although I reckon it’s less than most people expect)
For those of you eager for the Flames to get him:
Young, mobile, modern style NHL defenseman
Played a significant role on a cup winning team
Has all the skills in the world and would likely sign a long term deal to be part of our core.
Most players improve when leaving Buffalo.
For me, it comes down to trusting Conroy and his staff. If they believe in Byram then this could be a unique opportunity to buy low on a potential huge piece of the future.
For a team that seems immune to drafting in the top 5, well sometimes you need to take those swings.
If Byram was a sure fire 10/10 acquisition he likely wouldn’t be available so I would be okay with the Flames giving this a shot.

It all comes down to acquisition cost really.
Farabee + Mews + 2nd ... for sure do it
Zary or a 1st ... I'm more hesitant

I’ve got a feeling LA is likely offering Anderson and a 1st. And maybe a prospect. Then again, if that were the deal then it probably would’ve already been done. And Adams… well, Adams. Lol

Man, I cringe hard every time I see Mews in a trade proposal.
Makes my left eye twitch.
I know the situation isn't exactly the same, but it gives me serious Dobson/Hamonic vibes.

“Than” (comparative, not time).
What did we win with Dougie again? Oh, right, nothing.

If Mikey Anderson is somehow available from LAK then Conroy should absolutely get in on that. I think he's worth a lot more than Byram, but that's me.

Agree with you... and what worries me is because Byram is in Buffalo and a RFA the player is less likely to protect the Flames from themselves on this one. The only thing stopping us will be acquisition cost, as the Flames are likely getting asked for roster players/prospects, luckily we overvalue those as an org... if this was a futures only deal it'd be done already and it would be the third time in my life the Flames would go into the season bragging about their defence.

I think we have many young D who we need find out who is who.
Kuznetsov
Solovyov
Morin
Brzustewicz
Poirier
Grushnikov
Hurtig
Jurmo
So I hope Conroy give them some chance to play NHL this season and start to make decision about them.

Don't disagree with you but realistically, Byram's spot would not be something these kids are fighting for. Having him top 4 would theoretically be preventing someone from taking that spot but none of whom you've mentioned would/should be fighting for top/second pairing IMO.
The big question mark with him truly would be acquisition cost I think (+ contract demands I suppose).

I’d be down with Mikey and the Kings getting Byram.
