People are always going to find a way to be a Debbie downer about a pick, but I really don’t get why.
People do realize on hockey db they’ve got Zary at 6’0, 178 lbs, and Reschny is 5’11, 183. So why aren’t we making fun of Zary for being a pencil? Oh, is it because he’s 6’0? What are we, girls on tinder only swiping right for guys that make it 72” or more?
Center? Check
Decent size and speed? Check
Play driver? Check
What more do you want from this guy? I’m telling you right now, if he was 6’2/3 then he’d be drafted in the top 10. People should be happy he went to 18. I was afraid the Isles would’ve picked him at 16/17 with their back- to-back picks.
This is the only thing I can think of when people become obsessed with player sizes is the Moneyball scene where they’re “talking good body nonsense, like we’re buying men’s jeans, looking for Fabio …”

Im watching Reschny highlite packages and this kid id so slick, skilled and smart. There have been eras of Flames hockey where we never would have drafted a player like this but Im glad we are not in one those eras right now.
I was watching some more videos on Reschny and the Locked On Sens guys said that of Reschny's 66 assists in the regular season, 60 of them were primary assists. That's insane.
Guess I'll just have to watch this 42 minute video of all his points to confirm...

As Wheeler pointed out in his pre-draft article, Reschny stirred the drink in Victoria. The offence almost entirely went through him (and not because he was selfish).
I posted it before, but in the playoffs, 9 of Catton's 14 points in the Victoria-Spokane series were secondary assists. Reschny had only 4 secondary assists in the 25 points he scored during the entire playoffs.

I knew Reschny was an offensive catalyst in Victoria, but that stat is CRAZY.

Two questions that I know will never get answered:
Where was Reschny on Calgary’s draft list? Would he have still been the guy if they were picking at let’s say 11 for example?
How many players were on the list between Reschny and Potter?
I think it's safe to assume that Potter was directly behind Reschny on their list given that Conroy tried to trade up to land Potter, and only one true center in Mason West went between 19-31. The staff must be thrilled with how the draft unfolded after the Reschny pick.

If I had to guess and looking at the players taken in the latter half of the first round, given all the chatter about LA's draft picks offer for Andersson, I bet we still would've taken Potter at 24 if we had LA's pick.

I can provide some info on this one based on connecting the dots and players that were taken. Would Flames have taken Reschny before Kindel (11), Cootes (15), Nesbitt (12)? Yes-- I believe so.
I was on the record saying their target was still on the board after 15ish I believe. The Flames were really, really impressed by his playoffs stint.

Conny said they tried to move up to get Potter but he fell to them anyway so it sounds like he was the guy they targeted with the 2nd pick all along.

Sureloss pointed out his name bar was stitched on, which suggests they were obviously targeting him. Don't think many expected him to be there at 32, so they probably had him ranked close to Reschny.
(McKenzie had Potter at 21 and Reschny at 19.)

I think it’s safe to say at this point, after all of my personal hand wringing about the opportunity cost of the FLA pick being 32 instead of 22 (what could have been better f Toronto had finished the job in round 2), that the flames ended up with the exact same 2 players that they would have picked if they had 18 and 22.
