The Kings ended up trading down.

I'd imagine it was probably their 2025 1st before trading down as well as a few other picks. Probably the only 1st though.

Anyways, just peeking at the Kings roster. Man that is an old team. They are not an up and coming group of kids, that's for sure.

Kadri will be 35 to start the season and he is signed for 4 more years. He isn't bringing back a big return unless the Flames retain salary.

The Flames should still trade him. His contract means you benefit now but suffer later, and we aren't in a spot where that makes sense. The Flames are likely going to be worse next season and that might effect Kadri's play. This might be your best, and maybe only, opportunity to trade him.

Am I remembering correctly that there used to be a cap penalty if a player signed after a certain age and ended up LTIR-retiring after being traded to another team? For example, if the flames traded Kadri to the leafs and he LTIR-retired in 2 years, would there be a cap penalty to the flames at that point? This might be something from the previous CBA as I think it applied to Luongo and the Canucks after he was traded to Florida.

Yes that was on those back diving deal like Luongo.

No, the back-diving penalty was a separate thing. There was indeed a rule that if you signed a contract 35 and older, the team would get dinged for the full cap hit even if you retired.

The Luongo deal was more about teams taking advantage of cap savings by having the cash amount go down drastically in the last few years of a long-term deal, allowing the player to retire early without losing too much money while keeping the cap hit low.

If that rule is still in effect teams should add a condition of a further return if the player retires and they take a cap hit.

If the Flames are trading Kadri, they need to go scorched earth here and go after Mckenna. No chance they make playoffs without Kadri if he’s being traded for only futures and there’s no replacement of equal of better quality planned to replace him.

That means Andersson, Coleman, etc all need to go. Keep Huberdeau to hit cap floor and as a good mentor. Same with Weegs because he’s wicked.

I personally don't agree with this concept that he wouldn't bring a big return just because he's 35 with 4 more years left.

Yes, he'll bring a bigger return if we retain salary, but Kadri's showing no signs of age as of yet and his contract - while it might have been considered an overpay initially - is now verging on value territory and is only going to become a bigger value deal as the cap goes up.

Laughton/Roy+Cowan+Beniot?

Getting a top prospect, a piece that can be flipped as a rental for at least a 2nd, and a serviceable Dman? I don’t think we could expect much more for a 35 year old.

If he would consider going back to Colorado and an extension could be worked out a deal around Kadri+ for Necas would be interesting.

It would be like the Florida/Carolina Tkachuk options again. Go for the rebuild deal or the retool deal. I would think there would need to be a decent + with Kadri if the Flames were getting an extended Necas

Sharks get Orlov and claim Leddy. That's a remarkable upgrade to their D corps.

Kadris contract might lower his value but there's still no point trading hin for the Flames for junk. the don't need the cap space and he's valuable as a mentor if there's not at least one piece that can be an important part of the rebuild coming back.

Not directed specifically at you Mr. Coffee, but when we talk about wanting to scorched earth re-build around here, we all need to stop asserting the strategy is to "go after McKenna, or even go after 1st overall". That is not a strategy, that is a hope and a prayer. The team has zero control over whether they get that 1st overall pick, and it isn't even close to the mostly likely outcome, no matter how bad we might be.

The scorched earth supporters need to be comfortable with that strategy, assuming we won't get Mckenna, and be comfortable that this is the right strategy assuming we never get that first overall pick, and that we can build effectively from simply being in the top 5 (which btw, I'm not saying isn't a good strategy).

Average player salary is about 4 million. Sam Bennet just signed for 8. Tavares just signed for 4.4.

Kadri cap hit isn't bad, but its not value. Factor in age, term, and Kadri likely being very selective on where he would accept a trade and you aren't getting a huge return.

I am not saying you get nothing for Kadri, but it's one of those trades where the return would seem underwhelming until the shock wears off.

You can change that by retaining salary or taking back a bad contract.
