Just listened to the LP (leaked online), and wow. What a great album. I read something last week that touted it as a mix between "Illmatic," "Be," and "The College Dropout," and as crazy as thought sounds, it's an apt description.

Kanye's stamp is all over the LP, but there's a little more boom bap and chopped up sampling (a la Primo or J Dilla). And Common is bringing it back lyrically- adding a little more golden era-sounding battle raps than he's had on his last few albums, but the grownup love stories and conscious lyrics are still there.

I'm listening to it while I'm typing this, and I have to say again just how dope (!) it is. Hip hop has been so stagnant now for like 5+ years, so I tend to get a little excited when a decent LP actually drops! Anyways, all you true hip hop fans were bound to check it out anyways, but I know there are many of you on the board who are into good music regardless of genre and might've slept on this. So seek it out, and buy it when it comes out officially on the 31st. Ro stamped and approved.

Thanks for the review! There doesnt seem to be much intrest in good hiphop on this board, I used to make hiphop related threads here but due to the lack of intrest I decided not to bother any longer. I am personally a huge Common fan so I cannot wait for this album to drop. I have a buddy who has a pirated copy and says it is Common's most inovative disc to date....which if true, makes me darn excited.

On a related note....anyone in the Calgary area going to the Del show this Sunday?

Common is most definitley underrated. So much of the stuff in the mainstream right now is weak (see pretty much any hit single coming from the South....); guys like Common, Talib Kweli etc are getting overlooked. Hopefully another album with Kanye helps get Common a bit more exposure (he should have gotten more with BE).

That said, I really wish that Kanye would stick to producing. Dude is a beast behind the boards but for some reason I can't stand him as an MC. You can't hate on his production though.

That said, I do hope that this album is good... there's been very, very little in terms of solid albums from hip-hop this year.

I should say I've heard some stuff that leaked over a month ago and like the 7 tracks I heard then. How many are on the album? UGHH has a tracklist but only 11 songs.

12 tracks, plus "Play Your Cards Right" as a bonus.

I had heard most of them too, but for some reason, they all sound better as part of the album as a whole, which isn't that uncommon.

As for the unheard as of today tracks, "Start The Show" and "I Want You" are great, the upcoming single f/ Lily Allen "Drivin' Me Wild" is pretty nice too.

And yeah, some speculation as to whether or not it's a fake, but the bitrate is good, and the tracks are seamless, so it seems legit.

Thanks for the heads up.

I don't think hip hop's totally stagnant, just severly diluted! You have to dig through loads of garbage to find something good. Besides, there's tonnes of stuff from the 90's i'm still into, or just finding.

Anyone listen to Skratch Bastid?

You know what, I'm taking back the stagnant comment because I agree wholeheartedly with what you said.

Perhaps what I meant is that, like you suggested, the crap far outweighs the good stuff, and over the last 5-10 years, the gap between them is widening at an alarming rate.

As for SB, no, but I'm gonna check it out now.

Good to hear - Kanye and Common seem to have some real chemistry when they collaborate. I really enjoyed Be (probably my favorite Common album, I've had a hard time really getting into his older stuff, though I can appreciate some of it), so I'm sure I'll enjoy this new one.

Re: stagnant hip hop, I agree a big part of it is simply sifting through things to find the gems. Though by the same token, some people seem to get very excited when people drop a good album, and in that excitement they tend to try and immediately elevate this album by comparing it to past classics. In my opinion, this has more to do with trying to get people to pay attention to the album more than it really being on par with an Illmatic. My two cents.

I seriously pondered getting Del tickets, but I wasn't sure about the venue and ultimately decided against it. Not sure of what kiund of crowd he would draw.

Did anyone see De La Soul when they were in town recently? I didn't even know they were coming until the night they played. That would have been a great act to catch.

Tequila is quite trashy. However, with the show on a Sunday night, the crowd should be mostly all Del fans

Good call... and I think this is partially due to the mainstream hip-hop industry. Everybody is looking for the hit single that can be translated into album and ringtone sales with little concern about quality for the rest of the album..... although that seems to be a music industry thing now too. Plus, you're seeing the whole gangsta rap thing take over right now and a lot of the backpacker stuff go underground which is making the quality even harder to find (assuming that's the type of stuff you're looking for).

Couple that with some weak releases from usually dependable MC's (Nas, Talib Kweli, Mos Def..) and yeah...There are still some great acts out there right now though.

I saw Da Beatnuts at Tequila and it wasn't that bad of a venue. The normal crowd won't be there, as it will only be a concert night. The worst thing about it was that they were kicking out people for smoking weed.

Holy Crap! I went to high school with Paul (Scratch Bastid). Been watching him gain fans for years now, but I figured when I moved here from NS I wouldn't hear too much about him. Nice to see he has fans out here.... the man is a monster behind the decks.

Was thinking of checking out Del... been one of those artists I've been dying to see live, but seeing as I just moved here I have no one to go with.

Anyone ever gone to a show by themself? I saw Josh Martinez back home by myself, but friends showed up like 30 mins into the set so it wasn't all bad.

Anyone willing to hang out with a stranger for the night PM me!

edit: It's all about digging for good music. There have been tons of great albums released in the past 5-7 years that no one ever hears because the mainstream media doesn't pick up on it. Sage Francis, Atmosphere, MF Doom, Cunninglynguists, People Under the Stairs... I could go on forever!

I love the "hope" album by non-prophets, but Sage Francis' lyrics have never really appealed to me. But the beats on that album are some of the best. I love anything with some hardcore scratching, as long as it's done right and at the right place! Probably why I think Skratch Bastid is the best DJ out there now-a-days. I can't believe he hasn't won Canada's DMC even though he's a 2 time Scribble Jam champ (hands down). Kinda goes to show what a joke the DMC is. He was in town about 2 months ago releasing his new CD "Get Up!" and it is sooo fresh, i advise any hip-hop or even just a good music fan to pick it up!

He won every competition he ever entered in Halifax, to the point where he had to retire to give other people a chance! I agree, "Get Up" is great but to really appreciate how talented he is you just have to see him live. The guy can scratch with his feet for fata's sake!!

I'm a huge fan of Sage's lyrics, so I guess we have to disagree there. But yeah, Joe Beats is in fine form on Hope.

By the way, Del was awsome last night. I didn't really like that bar (horrible bartenders, bad sightlines), but he put on a pretty good show regardless.

Been looking forward to some good quality hip hop for the last 2 years now and can find nothing except for some gems such as Common "Be", Dilated peoples, and old De La Soul albums. I am looking forward to Common, Kanye, and Talib to release their albums. If Common ever came to Calgary that would be great! Looking forward to finding forever! it is released on the 31st you say?
