Who are the people making commercials these days? I generally don't understand what the great majority are trying to portray.

Yeah, I've been noticing a lot more British TV shows and films are borderline unintelligible.

"Are you sure this is in English?"

According to the linked article, young people use subtitles the most.

Quote:
Gen Z is, overwhelmingly, the generation most likely to be turning on subtitles according to Preply’s numbers, with 70 percent of respondents in the generation saying they use closed captions “most of the time” compared to 53 percent of Millennials, 38 percent of Gen X, and 35 percent of Baby Boomers.

And do we think this website is mostly Gen Z cliff? Do the hip young posters all signing up and participating give you that impression? Because I thought we were talking about the people here, yknow us old people. Elder millennials at best and more likely Gen X types.

But you’re right Gen Z does love subtitles. That is correct.

My 70+ year old inlaws use CC, mostly because they somehow turned it on and cant turn it off.

Yeah, I was going to say the only reason the Boomer numbers are so low is because they can't figure out how to turn them on. That, or their eyesight is even worse than their hearing.

If the old woman who lives next door to me is anything to go by, most Boomers just crank the volume of their TV to the maximum.

I use CC in case something is mumbled or I'm momentarily distracted (kids etc.), I can glance down and catch up on whatever was said vs rewinding to hear it again.

Yeah, both of my teenagers use CC when watching something on tv. I have to ask one of them to take it off Netflix/Amazon/Apple TV when I sit down to watch something.

This. I find it so distracting. Also, the timing can be off and it'll display the words before they've even said them. So especially for comedies, it just kills the timing.

I've accepted the vast majority of people seem to use them now, so I just deal with it. But it's an odd trend for people with good hearing.

I was making a joke that people are going deaf. It’s not that the sound is getting worse it’s the posters are getting old.
