Holy moly that’s tall. You can barely see the Calgary Tower way down below.

One was announced on July 2. The other announcement is from June 2. But yes, it's all Marriott brand.

Having a W Hotel is a status flag in the world. It's a honor. Toronto, Montreal and now Calgary in Canada. Even Vancouver doesn't have one.
Also the JW brand is iconic as well. This is a big announcement for the City of Calgary and a big flex for Truman.

Well I guess I don't consider a boutique hotel as a major hotel announcement

It is a little strange looking at first having the tallest buildings the skyline so far out on the perimeter, but if I could get used to the Bow I'm sure I'll warm up to this pretty quick.

I would imagine that if the new hotel offers an "NHL team" package as the Fairmont Palliser and Eau Claire Marriot currently offer then the proximity to the new arena will put it as the clear front runner for visiting teams.

Ah...more overpriced crap for rich folks (or wannabes). Meh.
Calgary is obsessed with money. And not for the better.

When there is public money involved....people complain. (New Arena)
When there is private money involved....people complain. (This Project)
Seems there is an issue with wanting nice things for your city in general.

People’s infatuation with the height of this building will always be hilarious to me. Sure, it looks like a penis… but it’s really not an issue… get over it.

I hope they put a marker on Centre ice dot and incorporate it as part of new development.
Maybe even the goal creases. So you can imagine all the history.

Hey man, maybe it's just me, but a building that's sole feature is an observation deck/restaurant should be able to see over the buildings around it.
Let's go to the Calgary tower, we can watch Joe from accounting eat his lunch!!

This is pretty much what happens in Edmon-suck. They stay at the JW marriott across the street, and walk across the +15 to the rink/practice facilities. I got a buddy who can confirm that for visiting teams, as well when i was there during the Kings series Game 2/3, I was staying there and ran into a bunch of players and execs.

Generally people don't understand how much tax revenue these types of projects generate and how the taxes benefit their lives considerably.
This one project has a $1.5b price tag, and in construction, about 15-25% of that goes to direct taxes (income taxes and the layers of corporate taxes mainly). It also generates a bunch of indirect spin off taxes during the construction process and afterwards, and establishes long term taxes from the increased land value and business revenue.
Projects like these, if planned well, provide considerable benefits to the broader population.
The problem is that it's tough to show exactly how this revenue benefits the broader population (health care is free, right!), but you can certainly see a rich guy wearing a fancy suit chewing on a $100 steak in the new restaurant and we can all imagine the fat cats making bank off a 69 storey building (despite the crazy risk it takes to build something like this).

Can't say I blame them for not wanting to set foot on the ground in Edmonton.
